Recently, CCRCD Staff members joined together with our partners and for a day of Arundo removal!

Arundo is a highly invasive species that grows up to 4 inches a day, which quickly outcompetes native flora, and is a fire and flood hazard. This group was hard at work cutting and removing the tall stalks down to their bases to reduce the fuel load.

This morning CCRCD staff returned to Davis Park in San Pablo, CA, for some much needed site maintenance!

Staff spent the morning picking up litter, removing invasive weeds and grasses, and creating space for California native species, such as the Narrlow Leaf Milkweed!

Yesterday, the Marsh Creek Watershed Council enjoyed a nature walk along Empire Mine Road and Sand Creek in Antioch! Along the way, we learned about ongoing conservation efforts to protect the Zeka property from proposed development and preserve Empire Mine Road as a recreational trail.

The Zeka property is surrounded on three sides by protected open space and is located in an area designated as having very high wildfire risk. Protecting this land would help preserve wildlife habitat, open space, and recreational opportunities for the community.

Antioch residents, we encourage you to get involved! The City of Antioch is hosting its next General Plan Advisory Committee meeting on Tuesday, November 3rd at 6pm at Antioch City Hall (200 H Street).

This is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and encourage the City to keep Zeka designated as open space in its General Plan. And thank you again to everyone who joined us for the field trip!

Join us again for another Ag Support Coffee Hour on Wednesday, November 4th, 2026 at the Knightsen Farm Bureau Hall!

Every first Wednesday of the month, technical assistance providers from CCRCD, USDA-NRCS, and UCCE will convene to connect with growers to learn what support is needed in Contra Costa County.

Light refreshments will be provided. No RSVP required.

Late last week CCRCD staff members joined wildlife bilogists from and for more turtle tracking and monitoring!

It was an amazing day out in the rangelands of Contra Costa County as the team caught, measured, and fit tracking devices on multiple Western Pond Turtles. This included the return of Turtle #58, who lost it's monitoring device but was refitted with a new one!

Thank you to all who joined us for Fall FLAME 2026 on Mount Diablo! 🔥

Just yesterday, fire agency members, land managers, and ecology experts from across the 9 Bay Area counties came together for our last FLAME conference of the year. Organized in partnership between CCRCD and East Bay Regional Parks, Fall FLAME 2026 was hosted at California State Parks’ Curry Canyon on Mount Diablo, where the group had ample opportunity to learn about fuel reduction techniques, land management strategies, and continue to build relationships amongst themselves.

What is prescribed fire? 🔥

Prescribed fires are low-intensity fires that are deliberately set to achieve specific conservation or management goals. Along with invasive species control and habitat improvement, prescribed burns can be used to prevent catastrophic wildfire by reducing dense, hazardous fuels and promoting the growth of fire-adapted native species.
