As we head into another weekend of commencement celebrations, we’re also reflecting on what those milestones represent across Ohio’s public universities.

The Ohio Department of Higher Education’s most recently published report shows degree completion rates have climbed by about 20%, meaning today’s students are much more likely to cross the finish line than they were a decade ago.

Even through pandemic-era enrollment challenges, progress didn’t stall. Institutions adapted, support systems strengthened, and students persisted.

Behind every cap and gown this season is a system that is increasingly helping students succeed.

Public universities give students real-world experience that prepares them to lead. At Central State University, that means stepping into national conversations on food and agriculture policy.

Through Model USDA, students took on real-world roles tackling complex issues like nutrition, sustainability, and food systems. It’s hands-on, experiential learning that builds confidence, critical thinking, and leadership skills.

These are the kinds of opportunities that help students connect what they learn in the classroom to the impact they can make in their communities and careers.

Two Central State University students — Royalty Hightower and Donniesha Hawkins — were among nearly 200 who gathered recently at Arizona State University’s Tempe campus to participate in an intensive national roleplaying conference titled “Model USDA.”

This week, Governor DeWine visited Bowling Green State University to share insights on leadership and civility. He shared lessons on bipartisan collaboration and encouraged students to pursue careers in public service.

Ohio’s public universities play an important role in advancing civic engagement and strengthening our democracy, and BGSU has a rich tradition of creating space for students to engage directly with bipartisan leaders.

Democracy is taking center stage at Bowling Green State University. School leaders and students welcomed Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to campus for the Democracy and Public Policy Network’s leadership luncheon.

Miami University has once again been named a Fulbright “Top Producing Institution,” continuing a long-standing tradition of preparing students for global impact.

The Ohio State University is leading the nation as the No. 1 producer of The Fulbright Program U.S. Scholars for the second consecutive year—and is one of only a handful of institutions recognized for both student and scholar awards.

Together, these achievements reflect something bigger than rankings:

They show how Ohio’s public universities are preparing students and faculty to lead, collaborate, and solve real-world challenges on a global stage.

From researching innovative health solutions in Peru to building partnerships across 16+ countries, Fulbright scholars aren’t just representing their universities—they’re representing Ohio.

A 50th birthday is often marked with special parties and gifts. But Wright State University alum Amy Wamsley’s 50th birthday was extra special. She celebrated her milestone birthday in the middle of a grueling swim across the English Channel, a feat achieved by fewer than 3,000 people since 1875.
