Katherine Johnson’s groundbreaking work as a mathematician played a pivotal role in launching America’s space exploration efforts, leaving an indelible mark on history. Born in 1918, Johnson displayed exceptional mathematical abilities from a young age, entering high school at just 10 years old and graduating summa cm laude from college by 18. She broke racial and gender barriers in a field dominated by white men when she joined NASA’s predecessor, NACA, in 1953 as a "human computer." Her meticulous calculations guided key milestones in the U.S. space program, including Alan Shepard’s first American spaceflight, John Glenn’s orbital mission, and the Apollo missions, including the historic Apollo 11 moon landing. Johnson’s contributions extended far beyond flight paths — she was integral to the development of early spacecraft designs and critical mission trajectories. Her trustworthiness earned her a place in history when John Glenn famously asked that she personally verify the computer-generated numbers before his flight. Johnson’s legacy is one of dedication, precision, and breaking boundaries, and her work continues to inspire women and minorities in STEM fields.
