ADHA Massachusetts ADHA Massachusetts We have more concern for the general health of our patients and not just their oral health .

The Massachusetts Dental Hygienists' Association was incorporated on May 19, 1944 by 11 hygienists “to assist in promoting the art and science of dental hygiene, elevate and sustain the professional character and education of the dental hygienists, promote mutual improvement, social intercourse and good will; disseminate knowledge of oral hygiene, enlighten and direct public opinion in relation to oral hygiene and dental prophylaxis; to represent, to have cognizance of and to endeavor to safeguard the common interests of the dental profession.”

Today's Massachusetts dental hygienists are endeavoring to do much the same thing in a different time and place. As dental hygienists in the 21st century we are also concerned with OSHA standards; with new technologies; and with increasing our political knowledge and clout to assist the profession of dental hygiene in serving the public's oral health and total health needs. The Massachusetts Dental Hygienists' Association is part of the American Dental Hygienists' Association and has representation on their Board of Trustees through the District One Trustee. We have collaborative relationships with many organizations and associations, including those in other dental fields, the medical field and public health. The Board of Trustees is the leadership conduit of the Massachusetts Dental Hygienists' Association and is lead by the President with assistance from the Executive Officers. The Board of Trustees is also comprised of Trustees that represent each of the 11 components and 6 Council Chairs. The Massachusetts Dental Hygienists' Association holds its' Annual Meeting in the fall of each year. It is at this meeting where the House of Delegates votes for its Executive Officers.

Congratulations to Our 2026 Clinical Dental Hygienist of the Year!

A Billerica, MA native, Katelyn Sullivan RDH, BSDH is proud to serve the community she calls home. A graduate of the University of New England with three years of clinical experience, she is committed to delivering personalized, high-quality care with careful attention to detail. She strictly follows ADHA standards of care—including thorough medical history reviews, blood pressure screenings, and comprehensive intra- and extraoral exams, to ensure every patient receives safe, evidence-based treatment. 

Katelyn meets patients where they are, educates them clearly, and creates customized treatment plans that fit their individual needs. A positive team player who values continuous learning, she strives to make every visit comfortable, collaborative, and effective.

Objectives
-Identify signs and symptoms of medical emergencies that can occur in a public health setting.
-Discuss how to manage medical emergencies.
-Discuss the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts Public Health Dental Hygienist.
-Understand risk management including liability insurance, data security, written informed consent, record keeping and HIPAA.
-Discuss CDC and OSHA guidelines including PPE, exposure prevention, postexposure management, and sterilization.

**This course meets the four hour requirement to become a Public Health Dental Hygienist in the State of Massachusetts.** 

**Must have 3 years or 4500 hours working experience as a hygienist to work as a PHDH**

Congratulations to Our 2026 Advocacy Dental Hygienist of the Year!

Katie Clare, RDH, MSHM is a licensed public health dental hygienist and dedicated advocate for oral health access in Massachusetts. With experience in both private practice and public health settings, she has seen firsthand the barriers many patients face in accessing preventive dental care.

As the Regulation and Practice Chair of the Massachusetts Dental Hygienists’ Association, Katie works to advance policies that strengthen the dental hygiene profession, expand access to care, and improve oral health outcomes across the Commonwealth. She is passionate about bringing the voice of dental hygienists and the patients they serve to the State House and advocating for meaningful change in oral health policy.

Congratulations to Our 2026 Research Dental Hygienist of the Year!

Tiffany Bairos, RDH, MPH is an Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, where she teaches caries risk assessment. A graduate of the Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists, she spent 18 years in clinical practice before transitioning to dental research and clinical trial coordination. Tiffany remains actively engaged in research and mentorship, contributing to publications and studies focused on Sjögren’s syndrome, xerostomia, ergonomics in dental professionals, and caries prevention.
