According to the 2023 Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), literacy scores declined across all levels of educational attainment between 2017 and 2023. Among adults with a high school education, the percentage performing at Level 1 or below in literacy increased from 24% to 32%.

These findings highlight why adult education programs deserve continued investment and advocacy. Through Contextualized Curriculum, The Literacy Cooperative helps integrate literacy into workforce development by connecting adults to training for in-demand careers and equipping community partners with tools to prepare learners for long-term success.
