Yesterday, we had the pleasure of attending the Mississippi Heritage Trust's Listen Up! Historic Preservation Conference in Brookhaven.

It was inspiring to spend time with individuals and organizations who share a passion for preserving the places, stories, and architectural treasures that define Mississippi's unique character. Since its founding in 1992, the Mississippi Heritage Trust has been a leading advocate for historic preservation, working alongside local communities to protect the buildings and landmarks that connect us to our past while strengthening our future.

Through initiatives such as the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places in Mississippi, preservation conferences, educational programs, and heritage awards, the organization continues to shine a spotlight on the importance of protecting the historic resources that make our state so special.

As communities like McComb continue investing in downtown revitalization, historic preservation remains one of the most powerful tools we have to celebrate our heritage, support economic development, and create vibrant places for future generations.

Thank you to the Mississippi Heritage Trust for an informative and inspiring day dedicated to preserving Mississippi's story.

Madison the City has been awarded a 2026 America 250 Heritage Award in recognition of preserving the former Madison-Ridgeland School and converting it to City Hall. Alan Hoops accepted the award from the Mississippi Heritage Trust and presented it to Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler. The Mississippi Heritage Trust works to save and renew places meaningful to Mississippians and their history.

Built in 1910 as a two-story schoolhouse, the Madison-Ridgeland Public School underwent additions in 1922, 1936, and the 1960s. The school is architecturally important as the earliest known use of the Jacobethan Revival style, the 1920 eraโ€™s most fashionable school design. The building is designated a Mississippi Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Hosted in partnership with the Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical Society, the evening offered a warm welcome to preservationists from across Mississippi as we gathered to celebrate another year of preservation successes and explore Brookhaven's rich history.
