Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) occur when colonies of algae grow out of control. These algae can deplete nutrient availability, oxygen availability, and block out sunlight. These conditions can have a negative impact on the health of organisms within our watershed. Additionally, some HABs produce toxins. These toxins negatively effect the health of watershed organisms and humans. In humans, exposure to these toxins could cause mild skin rashes, stomach cramps, and even vomiting. So, it is very important to continue water quality monitoring for our watershed and to look out for poor water quality warnings.

Last Saturday, two of our Brook and Bloom Crew Leaders, Anya and Alena, led the installation of the rain garden they designed after completing their Master Rain Gardener Training!

Their garden was installed at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland in Shaker Heights. The garden collects rain water directly from a disconnect downspout. This helps to slow water that would previously enter the Doan Brook rapidly through storm sewers, creating erosion and flooding downstream.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland is located around one of the headwater tributaries of the Doan Brook making it a fantastic location to help catch stormwater and protect the Doan Brook!

Thank you to our volunteers and Brook and Bloom participants for your hard work!

Last Friday, our Brook and Bloom Crew Leader, Ekko, lead the installation of the rain garden they designed after taking the Master Rain Gardener training. This Rain Garden was installed at the Cleveland Public Library - Langston Hughes Branch.

A rain garden at this location helps to catch stormwater before it enters the Doan Brook, helping to reduce flooding and erosion along MLK. The garden is filled with native plants making it attractive to both us and pollinators.

Thank you to our volunteers and Brook and Bloom participants for your hard work, as well as the Cleveland Public Library for your participation in this program. Don't worry if you missed this event, there will be many more just like it. Be on the lookout for future Brook and Bloom Rain Garden installations!

We're excited to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our friends and partners at Chagrin River Watershed Partners (CRWP)! As part of the celebration, CRWP is hosting a series of bus tours showcasing inspiring stream and wetland restoration, green infrastructure retrofit, and land conservation projects. We're especially proud that the Regional Partnerships Highlights Tour includes two projects that DBWP and CRWP partnered on together: the Sowinski Park stream restoration and the Willson Elementary School rain garden. Come see these projects firsthand, meet the people behind them, and learn how partnerships like ours are helping protect and restore watersheds throughout NE Ohio. Registration is free and includes lunch, so join us on Monday, August 24 for a great day of exploring and celebrating conservation in action!

The Regional Partnerships Highlights Tour is one of two tour options as part of Chagrin River Watershed Partners’ 30th Anniversary Bus Tours!

Visit five restoration projects across Northeast Ohio and see how partnerships are improving water quality, restoring habitat, and building healthier watersheds.
