We’ve heard that April showers bring May flowers. However, these spring storms also bring stormwater.

Compared to lawn, native plants soak up more water and anchor soil, reducing stormwater, erosion, and pollution in our watershed. Help us protect the Doan Brook this spring by planting natives!

Are you interested in learning more about the water that flows through your neighborhood? Join us on one of two dates to explore how you can become a local watershed steward for the Doan Brook by becoming a water quality monitoring volunteer!

Thanks to everyone who came out to Grow Not Mow this past Saturday! In all, nearly 60 volunteers worked together to plant 34 native trees, 15 flowering plants, and 1,000 native live stakes, and removed 2 bags of litter as well as hundreds of branches of invasive buckthorn and privet. It is truly wonderful to see what this event has grown to become - a space for community to come together to share knowledge and restore native habitat in the floodplain of the Doan, and we are so grateful to our community for making this possible!

Thank you to the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, the Friends of Lower Lake, Friends of Doan Brook Gorge, Scouts of America, the Tree Advisory Board, Shaker Sustainability Committee and Shaker Public Works, Communications & Marketing, and Shaker City Council for your collaboration!

Looking ahead, we are excited for National Public Lands Day on 9/26!
