Back Country Horsemen - Wasatch Front Chapter

Back Country Horsemen - Wasatch Front Chapter State-wide organization concerned about sustained equestrian access and proper use on public lands. OUR PURPOSE:
1.

WHO WE ARE:
Back Country Horsemen of Utah (BCHU) is a state-wide organization of men and women concerned about sustained equestrian access and proper use on our public lands. We are the Utah members of Back Country Horsemen of America (BCHA) with the same commitment to protecting the access of equestrians to public lands. WHAT WE DO:
We are devoted equestrians who love to ride and explore new trai

ls, and we assist with trail maintenance and improvement projects, keeping trails clear for all user groups. To perpetuate the common sense use and enjoyment of horses and mules in America's back country and wilderness.
2. To work to ensure the public lands remain open to recreational pack and saddle stock use.
3. To assist the agencies responsible for the management of public lands.
4. To educate, encourage and solicit active participation in wise and sustaining use of back country resources by horsemen and the general public, commensurate with our heritage.
5. To foster and encourage the formation of new chapters of Back Country Horsemen throughout Utah. OUR VISION:
In order to protect our heritage of back country stock use, we have joined service and education as composites to encourage and solicit active participation in the wise use of the back country resource by horsemen and the general public commensurate with our heritage. We welcome riders of all types, ages and interests into our chapters!

Lack of snow in Utah brings for early trail work. Just cleared our first trail of the season at North Fork Park in Liberty. We brought in a small crew and a pack horse to pull out the "real chainsaw" and clear some downed trees. Let the trail work begin!

⚠️ URGENT CLOSURE NOTICE FOR HORSEBACK RIDERS: Salt River Area ⚠️

The U.S. Forest Service and AZDA have issued a closure order affecting horseback riders throughout the entire Salt River horse habitat, due to detection of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) in Salt River wild horses.

SRWHMG has been paying close attention because of the current outbreaks, and immediately reported symptoms in several horses to AZDA. More than a dozen Salt River wild horses are currently severely ill, appearing lethargic, sweating, sometimes drooling, and showing lesions and scabs around their mouths and lips. (In the picture is Salt River Stallion Jake, who has already lost so much this year and is now alone.) We are working closely with AZDA to protect the health of both the Salt River horses and visiting domestic horses.

We have also had two unexpected, shocking deaths in one day. These horses are currently being necropsied for EHV and any other possible causes, so that we can provide accurate information about what may have caused these deaths, since VSV is not known to be fatal.

Closure Details:

Who it affects: Horseback riders only (horses, donkeys, mules)

Dates: December 6, 2025 – March 6, 2026

Penalties: Fines up to $5,000 and jail time

We will post more updates soon. In the meantime, please let your horseback riding friends know and contact SRWHMG if you notice sick Salt River horses. You may send pictures to our hotline: 480-868-9301. Please give sick horses space and respect.

Precautionary Measures:
Although not included in the closure order, we are asking visitors to change shoes between visiting the river and the hills, as no symptoms have been reported in the hills so far. The very old and very young horses are most at risk — and as many of you know, we have only one 2025 foal.

Thank you for sharing and helping protect the horses.
For the public and by the public, SRWHMG

It is Back Country Horsemen, Wasatch Front Chapter's honor to support the 2025 Weber County Fair. We provide parking assistance for various featured activities throughout the week. This year, members provided over 274 hours of support by setting up the parking lot prior to the fair and parking over 6,880 vehicles during its duration.

Part of our responsibilities include filling in vacant parking spaces in the 12 acre area as they become available. About half of our volunteers are on horseback, which allows us to be visible to inbound drivers. It also gives us an elevated view of the parking lot, the ability to scan for open spaces and move quickly through the sea of cars. We look forward to supporting the Weber County Fair in future years.

Another successful youth camp was held at North Fork Park in Liberty, UT. The youth learned about equipment maintenance and each child received a leather cleaning kit. Campers also learned about leg wound care on horses from a local veterinarian. Our youth also had the opportunity to improve their horsemanship skills on the provided obstacle course. Youth and parents alike enjoyed the challenge. Utah Search Dogs provided a wonderful learning opportunity for our youth by demonstrating their dogs and search skills. And finally, our service project posted the new trail maps for North Fork Park. It was a busy three days! North Fork Park Trail Conditions
