Happy National Trails Day! Trails take us into the heart of our public lands where we hike, scout, hunt, or just enjoy sharing these landscapes with our nation's wildlife. By conserving mule deer habitat both on and off trail, we promote more access to the beauty, bounty, and inspiration these lands provide. We're proud to partner with the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management on these efforts. Take the time to enjoy a trail on your public lands today!

The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) has been awarded $2.9 million from the State of California Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) to implement a large, multi-year fence improvement project that will support big game connectivity in northeastern California. The partnership has already identified 61 miles of fencing that will be removed or converted to a wildlife-friendly design, to reduce the entanglement risk from historic fence designs and reconnect fragmented habitat for safe passage during big game migrations. Did you know? Because doe milk is so high in fat and protein, newborn fawns gain 5 to 10 percent of their birth weight each day during the first few weeks of life. Leaving does and fawns undisturbed during those early weeks of nursing provides rapid growth and increases the survival of newborn fawns. Share this to help grow our herds!

The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) applauds the U.S. Department of Agriculture on this extremely important and critical initiative. This effort will help us ensure big game migrations and movement areas are conserved for future generations and coordinate across land ownerships for the benefit of everyone.

“Since 1988, the Mule Deer Foundation has partnered directly with the U.S. Forest Service on the ground, from habitat restoration to active forest management, because we know that healthy forests and healthy deer herds are inseparable. This MOU with the Boone and Crockett Club is an important step toward ensuring that hunting, wildlife recreation, and sound land stewardship remain central to how National Forest System lands are managed. We’re proud to stand behind this effort and remain committed to being a partner in making that vision a reality across the American West.” – Steve Belinda, Chief Conservation Officer, Mule Deer Foundation

Did you know? Fawn heart rates drop dramatically when they are approached by anything other than their mother. They lay their head and ears flat on the ground and remain motionless. Their heart beat drops from 177 beats per minute to 60 beats per minute and they temporarily suspend breathing. Normal patterns return shortly after being left alone. Please give does and fawns space this fawning season! Share this post to help grow our herds!
