Survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence have urgent, ongoing housing, legal, economic, health, safety, and other human needs. California can’t support them without federal funding. It’s time for Congress to increase fiscal year 2027 funding to meet survivors’ urgent needs.

At age 95, Dolores Huerta, renowned American labor leader, found the courage to speak out about the abuse and violence she endured as a young woman. In honor of National Older Americans month, we celebrate survivors like Dolores and recognize the fortitude and conviction of many other older adults who dare to denounce domestic violence and sexual assault.

Domestic violence against older adults is especially heinous. Feelings of shame and misplaced guilt create an invisible barrier anchoring them to abusive relationships. Years of abuse often result in helplessness and erode a person’s sense of self-worth.

As the premier domestic violence agency serving the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire, House of Ruth stands ready to serve older adults with dignity and respect. Our specialized domestic violence programs include survivor-centered, community-engaged activities designed to strengthen support, connection, and healing for victims of domestic violence, with particular emphasis on peer support and enrichment for older survivors. The hallmark of these programs is our signature trauma-informed care that sees the whole person and acknowledges their complex lived experiences.

We had the pleasure of participating in Policy Advocacy Day with Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault colleagues throughout the state. We are asking the State to fill a $100M gap in our federal VOCA funding to support critical services for all survivors. It was a day well spent! Now let’s hope we get the support in the budget!

We are heartbroken by the devastating loss of life in Shreveport, Louisiana, where eight children were killed in what authorities are describing as a domestic violence incident.

This tragedy is a painful reminder: domestic violence is not just about harm, it is about lethality.
Leaving an abusive relationship is often the most dangerous time. In fact:

1 in 5 victims are killed after they leave.

For many survivors, the question is not “why didn’t they leave,” but “how do they survive when they try?”
