What does human trafficking actually look like in our communities?

Join the RCMP and EVENforONE on October 20 for an eye-opening community discussion about exploitation, human trafficking, prevention, and community safety.

We’ll unpack common myths, talk about what trafficking can look like in everyday community settings, and explore the risks that can make people more vulnerable. Most importantly, we’ll discuss practical ways we can strengthen prevention and create safer communities together.

"In one recent federal [US] case, more than 100 children were found working hazardous overnight shifts cleaning slaughterhouses and meatpacking facilities across multiple states. In another case, children and young adults were transported around Florida and forced to sell candy for long hours under abusive conditions."

Child labor trafficking is often difficult to identify.

Yet, healthcare settings are one of the few places exploited children are seen by adults apart from the exploitation.

There is an urgent need to train pediatric clinicians, improve identification and provide trauma-informed care.

What can we learn when we ask survivors what they actually need from mental health care?

A recent study explored trafficking survivors’ experiences with treatment and found two themes that stood out: survivors want **survivor-informed care**, and many are navigating fragmented services that don't fully address their physical, psychological, and social needs.

The research suggests that **survivor-informed care** goes beyond being trauma-informed. It means restoring autonomy, building trust, respecting each person’s readiness, and recognizing that recovery looks different for everyone.

The practical takeaway is simple: care should be shaped with survivors, not simply delivered to them.

Every hand has a role to play.
