Everyone please meet our newest rescues, THE VALKYRIES 🐓
These factory farmed hens have lived their whole lives sitting in cramped cage, pecking out each others feathers out of boredom. Since we’re over 1 year old, they’re not seen as efficient egg layers and at sent to be slaughtered. Did you know 200 million chickens are slaughtered every single day?
Except on their way to the slaughterhouse, this particular truck was on the highway in Hobart, IN, when the driver hit the median, knocked 100+ hens out of the truck, and kept on driving. A kind person contacted Erin's Farm NFP and she took in all that survived being on the hot highway sun in a crate.
I picked up 15 of these hens on Sunday and they came home, forever. Some of the girls are in great shape, some need meds 2x right now (thank you Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic )
These girls have barely know how to be a chicken. Roosting (sitting on a branch), usually an inherent instinct to hens, is foreign to them. Having a dark place to lay an egg is foreign to them so they have been laying eggs all around the ground randomly. Even though it’s heartbreaking to know their reality, it is simultaneously healing to watch them start to roost, enjoy treats, and grow their feathers back.
Valkyrie is a title given to female warriors in certain Norse Mythology, meaning, “chooser of the slain.”
These ladies, unlike the other 200 million hens a day, will not be slain. Their crates being knocked off a slaughter truck will be the best thing that ever happened to them.
