As part of the Regional Referee certification process, officials complete the U.S. Soccer fitness test. Male officials are evaluated against the Women’s Category 1 standard, while female officials are evaluated against the Women’s Category 3 standard. The test has two parts: a sprint test and an interval endurance run.

Part 1 – Sprint Test
Six 40-meter sprints, each timed individually
Walk back to the start line between each sprint
Dynamic start: front foot on a line 1.5 m behind the timing gate
A slip or fall earns one repeat attempt for that sprint
Missing the time on one sprint allows a single makeup attempt after sprint six
Missing the time on two sprints ends this part of the test

Part 2 – Interval Endurance Run
40 continuous intervals
Each interval: 75 m run plus 25 m recovery walk
Walk zone marked by cones 3 m to either side of each 75 m mark
Arriving late to the walk zone once earns a warning
A second late arrival ends the test
Plan on roughly a 10-minute rest between the sprint test and the interval run

Male/Female Cat 1
40m Sprint (x6) 6.4 sec
75 m Run (x40) 17 sec
25 m Recovery 20 sec

Female Cat. 3
40m Sprint (x6) 6.6 sec
75 m Run (x40) 17 sec
25 m Recovery 24 sec
