💙 A summer morning on Chilmark Pond… and a reminder of what we’re working to protect.

Swipe for the latest CYANO map and please continue to follow red bloom advisories!

With cooler temperatures on the way, we’re hopeful conditions will improve. 🍂🌿

🌿💚 MV CYANO Chilmark Pond Weekly Update! 💚🌿

The Chilmark Boards of Health continue to issue a red bloom advisory throughout Chilmark Pond. The lower basin is still experiencing high cyanobacteria concentrations and very green, turbid water, so please continue to follow advisory recommendations.

On the bright side, Abel’s Hill Crossing is looking better! 🙌 We have not noticed the green scum or specks that were previously present. The Middle and Upper Ponds are following that same hopeful trend, with no visible green specks or scum. 💚🌱

That said, cyanobacteria is still present in the Pond, so we encourage everyone to continue following the red advisory recommendations and use caution around the water. 🐾🏊‍♀️

We’re hopeful about these positive signs and will keep monitoring and sharing updates with you! 🌞🌊💚

Chilmark Pond Bloom Update

These aerial photos, generously captured by Ollie 🙌📷, show the current extent of the bloom across each basin of Chilmark Pond.

1st Photo: Lower Pond- Dispersed green water throughout (taken near Abel’s Hill)
2nd Photo: Middle Pond Near Buoy - Paint-like green streaks and clumps
3rd Photo: Upper Pond Near Lucy Vincent Beach- Green paint-like surface clumps

A huge thank you to Ollie Becker Ollie for providing these incredible aerial images that help document current conditions! 💙

⚠️ Please continue to follow Red Bloom Advisory guidelines.

🗺️ You may notice some missing sampling stations on our map. Our team intentionally did not sample every location due to safety precautions, and we avoided getting onto the pond where conditions made it unsafe.

We’ll continue monitoring conditions and share updates as they become available

🚨 BREAKING: High cyanobacteria levels detected throughout most of Chilmark Pond system including the lower basin🚨
This morning high concentrations of Dolichospermum cyanobacteria were detected throughout the pond.
🔴 With A Red Advisory BOH recommends:
🚫 No swimming
🎣 No fishing
🛶 No paddling
🐶 Keep pets out of the water

Important note: the bloom can look different depending on where you are in the pond:

➡️What does the lower pond bloom look like?
The bloom in the Lower Pond currently appears as a diffuse green coloration throughout the water. Even if you do not see thick surface scum, cyanobacteria can still be present at levels that may pose a health risk.

➡️What does Abel’s Hill and Middle Pond look like?
• Near Abel’s Hill – paint-like green streaks and specks
• Middle basin – paint-like green streaks and specks

⭐️In good news: Cyanobacteria levels in the southern position of Middle Pond near the Lg Sonic buoy are noticeably lower compared to other stations. This could suggest the buoy is working…we will continue monitoring its impact.

🧪 We will continue monitoring conditions closely and will share updates as new sampling results become available.

🙏 Thank you for helping keep our community, visitors, and pets safe by following BOH recommendations!

MV CYANO has detected a cyanobacteria bloom in the Middle basin of Chilmark Pond. The Chilmark Board of Health has issued 🔴 red bloom “ADVISORY” for the northern region of this basin. The cyanobacteria bloom in Middle Chilmark Pond is a surface scum and looks like green paint streaks🦠 or specs on the water, please see photos. Please 🙏 follow guidelines suggested my MV CYANO. Dogs 🐶 are attracted to cyanobacteria, so please keep your dogs away from blooming waters.

We hope everyone is staying cool during these hot summer days! ☀️
Our team was out sampling the pond this morning, and here’s the latest update:
🟠 Lower Pond: WATCH status
🟡 Upper Ponds: ALERT status
We also detected Dolichospermum in a water sample from the upper ponds under a microscope 🔬. At this time, it is not at concentrations of red bloom advisory. We’ll continue monitoring conditions closely for any changes.

As always, please follow recommendations and avoid areas where cyanobacteria are blooming. Staying informed helps keep everyone safe while enjoying the pond!
