Breaking News‼️

After 5+ years of advocating for dredging in Chilmark Lower Pond💧, the day has finally arrived, and dredging has begun! Dredging is an essential tool 🧰used for pond management. This process will help Chilmark Pond have more successful openings 🌊in the future and improve water flow throughout pond.

The field season is ending on a good note! ⭐️
This week we had our last sampling trip‼️Due to the windy 💨conditions our science team 🧑‍🔬sampled a subset of stations across the pond. We were happy to see lower cyanobacteria concentrations😁.

➡️The lower pond dropped to yellow 🟡ALERT level
➡️Abel’s Hill dropped to orange 🟠 WATCH risk level
➡️The middle pond dropped to yellow 🟡ALERT level
➡️Lucy remains in the yellow 🟡ALERT level

‼️UPDATES FROM THIS WEEK 👇👇👇

1️⃣LG-SONIC
Yesterday our team went out on the middle pond 💧 to remove the sensors 📊from the LG-Sonic buoy. With the sensors removed, the buoy is ready to be hauled 💪out of the pond for the off-season!

2️⃣NUTRIENT WEEK
This week we had our LAST nutrient run of the season❗️Along with our regular water 💧 quality samples our science team also collected nutrient samples from 8 of the 11 regular Chilmark Pond monitoring stations. We filtered the samples at where they will then be processed to determine ➡️nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the pond. We will get nutrient data back in the off-season… stay tuned!

3️⃣MV CYANO (Swipe to end to see the map)
Lucy Vincent remains in the Yellow 🟡ALERT level. We are happy to report that the middle pond has dropped into the orange 🟠 WATCH risk level! Abel’s Hill still remains in the red 🔴 BLOOM ADVISORY and the lower pond is now back in the orange 🟠 WATCH. We may get out on the pond once more before the season ends. Let’s hope for one last run with lower cyanobacteria concentration numbers 🤞

GOOD NEWS!! ➡️ Cyanobacteria concentrations are getting lower pond wide as the temperatures ⬇️. Lucy Vincent has dropped into the Yellow 🟡ALERT levels along with the majority of the lower pond. Even though Cyanobacteria concentrations are lower in the middle pond, it still remains in the red 🔴 BLOOM ADVISORY since toxins have the potential of being high when the bloom is dying off.
