On Indigenous Peoples’ Day and throughout the year, Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation honors and celebrates Indigenous peoples and their incredible histories, cultures, and traditions.

We especially recognize the Wampanoag people, the People of the First Light, who have called Nôepe (Martha’s Vineyard) home since time immemorial. We celebrate their cultural heritage, traditions passed down through generations, and continued contributions to the Island community we all call home.

As we work to protect and care for these treasured landscapes, we remain mindful and appreciative of those who have stewarded them for generations and continue to do so today.

🍁 Hello October! Farewell Johnny Sue! 🐢

As autumn begins to take hold, it’s time for our beloved eastern box turtle, Johnny Sue, to head to her winter home! Today will be the last day to visit her at the Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary main trailhead until she returns next spring ☀️

We will miss seeing her every day, spoiling her with her favorite treat (slugs), and sharing her with you all; but as the temperature changes and colder nights creep in, the safest place for her to be is snuggled up warm with her winter caretaker.

Today’s a beautiful day for a hike! So be sure to stop by and offer your well wishes to Johnny Sue!

🟠 Hunting season is underway!

An early archery season began this week, so if you’re heading out to enjoy Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation properties—or trails elsewhere across the Island—please be aware that hunters may already be in the woods.

As a precaution, we strongly recommend wearing 🔶 BLAZE ORANGE 🔶 for visibility while enjoying any trail throughout hunting season. We have SMF blaze orange beanies and caps available if you're looking for some new apparel! Call 508.693.5207 for more info!

REMINDERS:

🏹 Archery/bow hunting is allowed WITH PRIOR PERMISSION at ONLY these five SMF properties: Brookside Ridge Preserve, Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary, Middle Road Sanctuary, Phillips Preserve, and Quansoo Farm.

🦌 Hunting permits are required. Please contact Joseph Rogers at [email protected] with any questions.

☀️ Hunting is permitted from one half-hour before sunrise until one half-hour after sunset.

🍂 There is NO hunting on Sundays.

🌾 Fi***rm hunting is NOT permitted on any SMF property.

Lovely morning for a walk around Huckleberry Barrens! 🌿

We loved spending time on the trails together, sharing the history of the property and what makes this landscape so special, and enjoying a perfect August morning outdoors ☀️

As summer begins to wind down, we hope you’ll take some time to get outside and enjoy all the amazing nature Martha’s Vineyard has to offer! And while you’re out there, don’t forget about ticks 😬 Take proper precautions, stay on the trails, and always do a thorough tick check when you get home.
