I only paint outside in the scenes that I am painting.  I’m kind of a purist about it-no photographs, no touching up in the studio.  The challenge is to capture the colors in the hour or so before the light changes.  My work is an homage to a particular place. ...I like places where there are few or no houses and where I can imagine that the land has been the same for a long time. I think there is something radical about painting the land.  I paint to communicate the beauty and magic of our island.

I had my first art class at age 11.  My Dad had signed me up for a life class at the Art Institute.  During summers in college I worked as a reporter for NBC in Kansas City.  I moved to NYC and made documentaries for PBS.  I began to devote myself to painting full time after moving to Martha’s Vineyard.  Several years ago a friend and I organized a plein aire group.  We have shows at Old Sculpin Gallery and it keeps me busy all year.

The Garden Club of Martha's Vineyard Blooming Art returns to The Old Mill in West Tisbury, where floral designers transform local artwork into living arrangements that offer a completely new way to experience each piece.

Stroll through galleries filled with creativity, meet fellow art and garden enthusiasts, and support the Garden Club’s charitable initiatives along the way. All artwork is available for purchase.

Marjorie Mason

I have been painting professionally since graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1981 and painting as a student since the first grade. I consider myself to be both things and often paint for the simple joy of creating with no other agenda for the finished artwork. 

My portfolio includes Landscape oils, Monotypes and Giclee prints. While I spent the first 15 years of my career painting monotypes, I dreamed of the freedom to paint outside in the Plein Air mode. Plein Air or “direct Painting” allows for the rapid growth that comes from an immediate engagement with nature. I leave my studio in September and October, to go outside and paint Martha’s Vineyard. The experience is nothing short of intoxicating!
