Did you know? At least 13 nations participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup are part of the French-speaking world or have French as a major language of public life.

Together, they showcase the richness, diversity, and global reach of the French language at the world's biggest sporting event. ⚽🌍🇫🇷

👇 Can you name all 13 nations without looking them up? Bonus points if you can do it in French.

This past May, we celebrated another inspiring chapter in the journey of our Étoile Scholars.

Surrounded by family, mentors, teachers, and supporters, we gathered to recognize the hard work, curiosity, and determination of these remarkable students. Their achievements reflect not only years of dedication to learning French but also a willingness to embrace new cultures, perspectives, and opportunities.

For more than 25 years, the Étoile Scholars Program has opened doors for Chicago Public Schools students through language learning and cultural exchange. Watching this year's scholars reach this milestone reminds us why this program continues to matter.

Congratulations to our graduates, and thank you to everyone who helps make these life-changing experiences possible.

⭐ Félicitations, Étoile Scholars! We can't wait to see where your journey takes you next.

AFC + Chicago Fire + France
The colors were supposed to be red, white, and blue.
Then Antoine Griezmann showed up in purple and honestly... we're willing to overlook it. 💜

We've teamed up with the Chicago Fire to offer our community special discounted tickets starting at just $29 for a match between the Chicago Fire and Orlando City FC, featuring French football superstar Antoine Griezmann.

The match is on Wednesday, October 28, but we're telling you now because we know tickets will disappear faster than you can say oui.

Whether you're cheering for the home team, excited to see Griezmann, or simply looking for a uniquely Chicago evening with a French twist, we'd love to see you there.

Each ticket directly supports the Alliance Française's sports and cultural programming.

Whether you frequent wine tastings, have toured a vineyard, or known the basics of wine production, chances are you've heard the term "terroir" thrown around. Perhaps you've been taught that terroir is simply the environment in which a grape is grown. However, as with most French words with no direct English translation, the real meaning of "terroir" is much more complex and is rooted in French culture, history, and gastronomy. 🍇 🍷

In French, "terroir" describes the environmental factors and climate of a crop that contribute to its identity - its taste, its texture, its smell. Terroir is part of French culture, a culture that varies from coast to coast and from village to village. It plays a large part in shaping local cuisine and traditions. Terroir tells the story of a physical environment & its habitants producing and flourishing together.

Considering that France has one of the most renowned gastronomies in the world, "terroir" is a word you simply MUST know to be a "francophone" or "francophile." 🤗 🇫🇷

We had a blast at Ogden International School's International Night! 🏫

We chatted with students and parents about France, the Francophone world, and AF-Chicago's kids programming. It was incredible to see so many countries represented by Chicago cultural organizations who strive, like us, to connect the city to the world. 🏙️ 🌍

We met so many curious kids - a few students excitedly shared that they had just learned the history of the Eiffel Tower in class! ☺️ 🇫🇷

Ogden International community, thank you so much for welcoming us with open arms. We can't wait for next year! 🎉

As we approach the third and final lecture of our 2026 Symposium on the Arts of France, we'd like to take a moment to highlight last month's lecture, presented by Linda Levy, President of the Fragrance Foundation.

The smiles were genuine, the laughs were abundant, and Linda made every guest feel comfortable to share his or her unique experience with fragrance. Linda emphasized her belief that every perfumer is an artist and each bottle of fragrance represents its creator's hard work, dedication, and creativity. Un grand merci à Linda Levy! Thank you for sharing your expertise and lovely character with our guests. ⭐️

Missed last month's lecture, but still want to discover what our annual Symposium is all about? Don't worry - you have one more chance to be part of the Symposium experience. Reserve your seat NOW for our final lecture - Senteurs et Émotions with Camille Goutal & Gloria Groom. (More info & tickets can be found at the link below). We hope to see you there!

This week, we bring you another French term with no direct English translation: le dépaysement. Use this term while traveling outside of your home country, or within your country if the occasion arises. Le dépaysement describes the feeling of disorientation that comes with being displaced - and separated from all that is familiar and comfortable. While many assume that dépaysement describes a negative feeling, this is not exactly the case!
🌎 ✈️

While traveling, the French often exclaim"quel dépaysement!" to express their admiration for their surroundings and gratefulness for a change of scenery. Dépaysement implies an "out-of-the-ordinary" experience, a kind of culture shock that while unsettling, is also awe-inspiring. ✨ 📸

So next time you are traveling and feel completely out of place, but in the BEST way, don't forget to pull "dépaysement" out of your French word bank! 🇫🇷
