Alliance of the Southeast - ASE

Alliance of the Southeast - ASE We are a nonprofit organization specializing in coalition building and social justice work to create a louder voice for Southeast Chicago.

ASE (pronounced “a” “s” “e” in English, and “ah-say” in Spanish) is the culmination of nearly two years of work by the Alianza Leadership Institute to change its mission according to the needs of the community. Many residents and church leaders realized that the southeast region was one of the only parts of Chicago without a permanent coalition of community-based institutions working together for

change. In fact, every quadrant except this region has some such collaboration. Southeast Chicago, it seemed to many, might benefit from a permanently staffed organization to meet the needs of churches, schools, businesses, and nonprofits. They would bring a voice to South Chicago, where the Southeast Side is almost always the region hat is neglected, often even unheard of to the rest of Chicago. This coalition would also work for positive change locally through asset based community development.

The Alliance of the Southeast stands with Cheryl Johnson and People for Community Recovery in response to the May 6 Chicago Sun-Times article, “New Zoning chair Villegas begins chipping away at backlog of stalled projects."
While the City Council moves to clear the backlog, we must ask: Who are these projects for, and what is the cost to our health?
Cheryl Johnson reminds us that for decades, efficiency in zoning has often meant the fast-tracking of industrial pollution in Black and Brown neighborhoods on the South and Southeast Sides.
On the Southeast Side, zoning is a matter of life and death. Moving 138 stalled projects through the committee without the protection of the Cumulative Impacts Ordinance is a return to the status quo that created sacrifice zones in our backyard.

We call on Zoning Chair Gilbert Villegas and the City Council to:
Pass the Hazel Johnson Cumulative Impacts Ordinance and ensure no community is forced to take on more than its fair share of pollution.

Development without protection is just another form of displacement. We aren't just looking for growth; we are looking for justice.

S. Chicago meeting on Water Use, Water systems, & Data Centers with MWRD Commish. Sharon Waller
Wed., April 22, 6-7:30pm
South Chicago Library, 9055 S Houston Ave.

South Chicago meeting on water systems, including water use, waste water, water discharges, and data centers, with Sharon Waller, MWRD (Metropolitan Water Reclamation District) Commissioner. This is an information session.

Come and ask your questions!

Note for community members: There will be a data center at the South Works site to support the quantum companies there (as stated by Related Midwest in industry magazines, and Quantum partner Diraq). Data centers have received a lot of attention right now, due to extensive impacts on water systems and the electrical grid. This session focuses on water systems. This is a good opportunity to ask questions about this as well.

Hosted by Sharon Waller, MWRD (Metropolitan Water Reclamation District) Commissioner
Note: All opinions are Sharon Waller's, and do not represent those of MWRD.
