Enjoyment was had!

A massive thanks to everyone who helped make yesterday happen! Combining Sundays on the Boulevard: Animalpalooza with the opening of the fifth annual Chicago Sukkah Design Festival was ambitious to say the least, but we think it turned out great!

Xena hereby invites you to join your neighbors at Sundays on the Boulevard: Animalpalooza this afternoon (September 27) from 1:00-4:00 pm Douglas Blvd between Central Park and Lawndale Ave. In addition to the petting zoo (and an insect petting zoo) there will be live music, horseback riding, and a dog show!

Also featured: Ida’s Artisan Ice Cream, bird house painting with Courtney Gipson, free books from Open Books, plants from Windy City Harvest Farm on Ogden, massages, horseback rides, face painting with LUSKII, balloon animals with Theodore A. Thompson and many vendors and community organizations ranging from Chicago Chess Foundation to DAT JERK SPOT to ElvinExplores to Sinai Chicago to Carole Robertson Center to NLCCC and NLCCC GROWSS

And oh by the way, it will be the opening celebration for the Chicago Sukkah Design Festival across the street, and a special Sunday experience of Terreon Collins Where the Blood Flows down the street at the Pop-Up Spot

Chicago Sukkah Design Festival OPENING CELEBRATION Sunday, September 27, 1 PM -5 PM!

We’re thrilled to announce that the Chicago Sukkah Design Festival (CSDF) returns for its 5th edition, opening SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 and running through October 19! Link in bio for full schedule of 2026 public programs.

CSDF brings together neighbors, community organizations, designers, artists, students, and faith leaders to co-create sukkahs—structures inspired by Jewish tradition—reimagined as places of belonging, solidarity, and hope. CSDF models how interfaith and intercultural collaboration can transform contested histories into shared futures. By anchoring the sukkahs in ongoing neighborhood use, we aspire to cultivate living monuments to resilience: ‘third spaces’ that celebrate our collective humanity, and offer sanctuary for reflection, dialogue, and action toward a more just and compassionate world.

During CSDF, the landscape of unique sukkah structures is open daily to the public and activated with programming. After CSDF, each sukkah is relocated and re-installed at the organizations that co-designed them as permanent program spaces, including as an outdoor exercise station, drum circle oasis, nature play pavilion, and teen hang-out hut.

It’s back! The final Sundays on the Boulevard of 2026 is everyone’s favorite ANIMALPALOOZA! Featuring a petting zoo, horseback rides, a dog show, resources for pet owners, plus live music, free food, art making, a giant puppet from Red Line Service, face painting, vendors, and (as always) much more!

This year will be a special treat, as it will also be the opening celebration for the fifth annual Chicago Sukkah Design Festival across the street at James Stone Freedom Square!

Some 📸 from Friday’s opening reception for Terreon Collins remarkable immersive experience, “Where the Blood Flows.” This multimedia meditation on the artist’s experience living with Sickle Cell Disease is truly a must-see.

Thanks to everyone who came out, and especially to Rochelle Jackson for the crochet workshop, Salads4me for the awesome food, and Makoto Yamaguchi for the powerful performance with Terreon!

“Where the Blood Flows” is open at the Lawndale Pop-Up Spot (3601 W Douglas Blvd) through the end of October.

Today is the day you will learn … Where the Blood Flows!

Please join Terreon Collins (Terreon Collins) and the Lawndale Pop-Up Spot aboard the S.S. Hemoglobin at the opening of our final exhibition of the year, “Where the Blood Flows.” This is a remarkable, immersive installation, exploring Collins’ own life journey as an artist with Sickle Cell Disease.

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and this is an opportunity to experience a palpable sense of his world.

The opening event, from 4:00-7:00 on Friday, September 11, will feature a crocheting workshop with Rochelle Jackson, food, crafts, and information about Sickle Cell Disease.
