We just couldn’t say no. Welcome to the family Dolly. This sweet girl’s plea broke our hearts. Her story is worth sharing as she deserves it be told so you know just how darn resilient she is. A few days ago, an urgent plea came in for a pregnant Cane Corso in active labor. Our amazing volunteer in the area cancelled appointments and rushed to the shelter to help. With an experienced foster’s willingness to help with a pregnant Corso we felt confident MLCR was the best place for her. Unfortunately, she came into the shelter as a stray so rules and regulations wouldn’t permit an immediate pull. This girl gave birth in a scary, loud shelter during the night with limited to no staff to support her. The morning dawn brought with it a horrific finding as she laid there in the kennel after losing all her puppies in a pool of vomit, bloody discharge, and a kennel full of diarrhea. There is no doubt she suffered immensely during what should have been a beautiful beginning for her and her babies. Our temporary foster made a promise on that first day that she would be back—and back she came on 9/25 the day her stray hold was up—fittingly her new name to accompany her new life is Dolly Pawton. She was sprung from the shelter and last night spent her first night in a warm, quiet home surrounded by love and kindness. Welcome to the family Ms. Dolly…there will be no more heart wrenching tragedies for you because we got you baby girl, we got you… Islands in the stream, That is what we are!

Ms. Dolly needs a longer-term foster. Unfortunately, she is heartworm positive. As with all our fosters, MLCR will provide financial support for all preapproved medical care for Dolly. We also provide 24/7 support for all our foster families. Please consider fostering Dolly, a link to the foster application is in the comment section.

Please be patient as we learn more about Dolly, for now our focus is getting her into a long-term foster home so once well enough she can start heartworm treatment. As of now we know she loves humans, rides well, did well for grooming, and enjoys big fluffy dog beds—humans snuggling on dog bed makes it all the sweeter! Dolly Pawton is currently in a temporary foster home in Michigan but can transport to other states of a reasonable distance (meaning she isn’t a candidate for a cross-country trip).

Yes, we are still closed for intakes as we still have 3 males in need of foster homes—Wes (1 year), Mack (5 years), and Lefty (1 year).

MLCR is closed for intakes as we are still trying to get fosters for Wes in Michigan, Mac in Wisconsin, and Lefty in Wisconsin. We need fosters, please apply.

Then the plea comes in for Iris a 2-year-old female Cane Corso roaming alone, thirsty, hungry, and severely emaciated. Still, she is as sweet as can be so much so that every protruding bone in her body must be made of sugar. Poor girl weighs a mere 54lbs. We couldn’t say no but we couldn’t say yes without a foster. Whew did she luck out as when we reached out to one of our fabulous foster families in Texas, they too couldn’t refuse. Small world as they lived in that small Texas town and knew of the shelter she was at…somethings are just meant to be. Today the stars are aligned for this sweet girl as she was picked up and is on her way home with her foster family (she can’t stop cuddling and hugging foster mom). To celebrate her freedom and new life she is sporting a new name…welcome to the family Brandy!

Willow is a sweet 3 year old female Corso who is on her way to her foster home. Willow is spayed, current on vaccinations and microchipped. She will be traveling with a health cert, vaccination records, a martingale collar, a harness, and two leashes.

It is MLCR policy that no other dogs, cats or children participate in the transport.

Ahoy Mates, Captain Corbin here with my big debut and the portion of my history known to rescue. I guess I should get the history part out of the way as if you viewed my pictures, you might be wondering how the heck I lost an eye. Avast, ye scurvy dog! —it was not walking the plank; not fighting those scallywags for the treasure; and it certainly wasn’t poking myself in the eye putting on mascara (Do I look like Johnny Depp for Pete’s sakes!). Honestly, my eye was injured prior to landing in a Kentucky shelter but it sure was nasty looking and worked to gain some sympathy—it hurt like the dickens too! A lady from a rescue group saw me sitting there all sad and injured. She took up the fight to get me released with her fiery spirit as I really did need to see a doctor, pronto. So off we went, she got me vetted then the news came that the eye needed to be removed as there was infection and the injury was substantial. She was a hot mess; I was like, lady—I am a pirate—remove the eye and get me a patch; it will help with adoption! I am now a healthy one-eyed Cane Corso in search of a family who has an eye patch to cover my vacancy. Only potential adopters with access to eye patches need apply, as I won’t settle for less!

After Captain Corbin was vetted the wonderful lady reached out to MLCR requesting a transfer as her unfamiliarity with the breed left her feeling ill-equipped to find him an appropriate adopter. MLCR couldn’t refuse and welcomed this one-eyed, 100+lb couch potato into the family. The epitome of love and kindness Captain Corbin has yet to meet a stranger with a constant stream of instant friendships made during his many adventures whether it is strolling through the neighborhood, visiting the firehouse, or running an errand to Home Depot. He mastered the Corso lean and uses it during his adventures to convey his gratitude for gentle pets and words of praise.

Captain Corbin would do best in a home with children at least 12 years of age as he can be a rough player and that 100+lb lean can knock a young one over. He loves going on adventures and prefers being home with his humans but is not destructive when they are running errands without his assistance. He is happiest when another dog is in the home and enjoys horsing around with his 4-legged foster buddies. With a bit of a pirate prey drive, he would do best in a home without felines as the foster feline has been made to walk the plank (no worries she is fine but best to avoid the temptation).

Captain Corbin is vaccinated, microchipped, neutered, and current with preventions for heartworms, fleas, and ticks. He is house trained. At 2.5 years of age this stunning one-eyed beauty lives by the pirate moto ‘A pirate’s life is one of adventure and freedom’. He wants you to know Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate; your application to adopt would be the true treasure of a lifetime…BUT don’t forget the eye patch!

Lt. Dan here looking for my Forrest Gump so I can be his first mate at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company! Okay so that isn’t really me, but I am truly looking for a partner to share my life with whether it be a Forrest, a Jenny, or a Susan…I would be grateful and most obedient. Unlike a box of chocolates where you never know what you’re gonna get—with me—you know exactly what you’re gonna get.

Lt. Dan is a big gentle guy. A tall boy, who will lean all 140 lbs. of love into you so you better have a strong stand or be sitting. He may even surprise you by trying to sit on your lap. He is respectful of mobility devices such as crutches, wheelchairs, and canes as he patiently waits until the human is sitting to approach for affection. He soaks in affection and cannot get enough ear rubs. He loves chew toys and at times will play fetch. He is a dream to train and very food motivated, his foster hasn’t found a treat he doesn’t like. Breakfast and dinner are his favorite times of the day.

Lt. Dan is spectacularly gentle with the tiny dog in his foster home; he has exhibited exceptional social skills with other dogs he has met. And if you have a rambunctious tiny dog, Lt. Dan has demonstrated the patience of Job as the little literally climbs and lays on him (unfazed is a good descriptor). He is the most patient brother a small dog can ask for and gladly fills the role of an emotional support dog for a little one. Although Lt. Dan is being fostered with cats, he does like to give chase when the opportunity arises so MLCR would prefer there not be any felines in his adoptive home.

Lt. Dan is super intelligent (probably would have invested in those Apple Computers); he knows and responds to many commands. Walking him is a delight as he doesn’t pull on the leash and ignores other dogs…he is very much about the walk/stroll. Lt. Dan loves the water (could be a shrimp boat connection) and the beach; he is a sunworshipper. At night he sleeps next to your bed on a mattress. He likes car rides (you hardly know he is there) and will leap in the back seat quietly in a down position. He is the perfect companion for someone who is not very active and takes a daily leisurely walk. He is content with a back yard, a daily walk, and a nice comfy couch or bed. Lt. Dan is a Corso so true to the breeds nature, he requires slow, proper introductions when strangers are visiting in the home. When outside of the home, Lt. Dan is more amicable at meeting people.

Lt. Dan just turned 6 years of age on Oct. 3. He came into rescue as an owner surrender, so he has never had to experience the trauma and hardship of shelter life (fosters really do save lives as I am not sure how well Lt. Dan would have navigated shelter life). Lt. Dan lived with children in his former home. Lt. Dan is fully vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, and current on preventatives for heartworm, fleas, and ticks. He is house and crate trained; however, he is a BIG boy so needs a very large cate; he also is not destructive in the home when not crated while humans are away. He is currently being fostered in Florida but travels well and our Corso Cabbies will help to convoy him home. He is looking forward to finding a family who will love and cherish him.
