The Be A Family Fertility Fund and Adoption Fund provides loans up to $15,000.

What do snakes and interest-free loans have in common?

The word for “snake” is very similar to the word for “interest” in Hebrew. Interest is like a snake secretly attacking a person’s livelihood.

🐍When someone has to borrow money and then pay back a little more than what they borrowed, it starts as a little bite.
💰But slowly the bite mark grows, requiring more and more money.
🚨Eventually it swells, making it nearly impossible to come out of the cycle of debt.

In April 2021, D’vorah’s husband left her and her daughter in Philadelphia, then quietly cut her off from all financial support. But then she found HFL, who met her with understanding and kindness.

Since 1984, we’ve made more than 2,000 interest-free loans totaling over $6 million for needs including bringing family members to the United States, dental work, car repairs, tuition and books, rent or mortgage payments and much, much more.

When Max Tabak was seven years old, his family fled the Soviet Union with little more than what they could carry. Crossing borders and sleeping in train stations, the family endured incredible hardship before finally landing in their new home.

Even after they arrived, America offered possibilities… but it wasn’t easy.

What helped bridge that gap? A small, interest-free loan that helped his uncle buy a car, get to work, and start building a life.

"That extra dollar can really change someone's entire life," Max says.

Decades later, Max is a proud Philadelphian, an eight-year HFL board member, and someone who thinks a lot about memory: what it means to have been helped, and what it costs when we forget. At a moment when antisemitism is rising and the safety net is fraying, his story is a powerful reminder of why this work exists, and why it's never been more urgent.
