We are extremely grateful you are continuing your dad’s legacy. He taught us a small whisper grows into a monumental echo.

My father would have turned 72 this week, and this is a note I never thought I’d write.

To everyone who has shared kind messages and words of encouragement, thank you. Your stories, memories, and moments with him, some that I didn’t even know about, have meant more than I can put into words. I appreciate each one and am grateful you took the time to share them.

My father was a special person for so many reasons. Beyond being an incredible father, husband, and member of the community, he was a celebrated journalist for nearly fifty years. He took tremendous pride in his profession and in serving the Minnesota community.

To keep his light and legacy alive, we have partnered with the National Association of Black Journalists, an organization that was dear to my father’s heart, to launch the Larry Fitzgerald Scholarship Fund. The fund will support current NABJ student members who are pursuing journalism or communications degrees with an emphasis in sports.

My deepest gratitude to everyone honoring his memory.

We Did Not Know.

We Did Not Know.

Most people know Jackie Robinson as the man who broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier in 1947. But fewer people know that athletic greatness ran in the family.

His older brother, Mack Robinson, was one of the fastest men in the world.

At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Mack Robinson won the silver medal in the 200 meter race, finishing just behind the legendary Jesse Owens by only four tenths of a second. Owens won gold with a world record performance, while Robinson secured silver against some of the best sprinters on earth during one of the most politically charged Olympics in history.

Those Olympic Games were held in N**i Germany under Adolf Hi**er, who hoped to use the event to promote racist ideas about A***n supremacy. Instead, Black athletes like Jesse Owens and Mack Robinson embarrassed those theories on the world stage through their talent, discipline, and dominance.

What makes Mack Robinson’s story even more remarkable is the struggle he faced after returning home to America. Despite becoming an Olympic medalist, he still dealt with segregation, discrimination, and limited opportunities because he was Black. Like many Black athletes of that era, international success did not protect him from racism in everyday American life.

Mack worked various jobs after the Olympics and continued competing in athletics, but he never received the level of recognition many white athletes with similar achievements enjoyed. His younger brother Jackie would later face similar hostility when integrating Major League Baseball, enduring racist abuse while changing sports history forever.
