Many schools and communities participated in National Walk to School Day across Orange County yesterday. Safe Kids Orange members were out bright and early to support Rashkis, Ephesus, Carrboro, River Walk, and Hillsborough Elementary Schools. Thank you to everyone involved with yesterday’s Safe Kids Orange community car seat event with Families and Communities Rising (FCR) Early Head Start and Head Start-it was another success! We could not do it without all our CPS Technicians volunteering their time-Thank you Hannah, Meghan, Suzanne, James, and Audra! A special thank you to Officers Davis and Humphrey, Jessica, and Laquanda for volunteering to help at their first child passenger safety event. Thank you to everyone with the Fairview Center for getting everything organized and helping to promote the event. Safe Kids Orange provided 18 car seats checks and 9 new car seats with 13 families in less than 2.5 hours...whew!

The significant increase in e-scooter injuries among children in recent years is a reminder that these e-mobility devices are not toys. They can reach speeds that put children at risk for serious head injuries, fractures, and even death, especially when ridden in traffic.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under 16 should not ride or operate e-scooters because they may not yet have the judgment, experience, and skills needed to safely navigate traffic and other roadway hazards.

For older teens who do ride, a properly fitted helmet is essential. Helmets are the most effective way to reduce the risk of serious head injury and should be worn on every ride.

Taking advantage of the last few days of the summer! Safe Kids Orange members worked with PORCH Hillsborough today to distribute safe medications, secure fi****ms, water safety, child passenger safety, and fire prevention resources with the Fairview Community. A big thank you to the Hillsborough Police Department for hosting a medication take back and for their outreach last Monday evening with Whit's anniversary celebration.

Safe Kids Orange and Safe Kids Chatham were able to purchase 31 additional car seats for our community car seat program with the help of our Auto Club Foundation grant. Thank you very much for supporting our program as we see the need increase and our program expand. Thank you to all the members (and their families) who helped unpack and organize all the seats today!
