Thank you Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department for including Safe Kids Orange education and resources during the neighborhood canvassing! In addition to the 36 smoke alarms, we provided cable gun locks, medicine lock boxes and pouches, and medication disposal kits to many families in the neighborhood. Safe Kids Orange will be out with Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department this Saturday in the Ridgewood Mobile Home Community helping to distribute and install free smoke alarms. We will also have free cable gun locks, medication lock boxes, medication disposal kits, and educational resources all on hand. Please help spread the word!

Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks the start of the busy boating and summer travel season. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is encouraging safe boating practices and reminding the public of the dangers of operating a water vessel while impaired.

On the Road, On the Water, Don’t Drink and Drive is a public safety campaign aimed at reducing alcohol and drug-related incidents on the roadways and waterways.

“While the overall number of boating incidents investigated has been declining in recent years, last year we saw a troubling rise in fatal boating incidents,” said Lt. Anna Barbosa. “So far this year, fatalities have currently surpassed last year’s numbers. Our goal is for everyone to enjoy their day on the water and return home safely. To do so, avoid alcohol while boating—or if you choose to drink, designate a sober operator. And remember, life jackets save lives—don’t just have enough on board. Make sure everyone wears one.”

According to the United States Coast Guard, most recreational boating incidents occur in the months of June, July and August. Operator inattention is a leading cause of boating accidents.
So far, in 2026, there have been 26 boating incidents investigated. Five have been fatal, resulting in five fatalities. Alcohol was a factor in three of those incidents.

Boating incident stats for 2025:

- 138 boating incidents reported, slight decrease from the year prior (-9.2%)
- 25 fatal incidents resulting in 26 fatalities, major increase from previous year (+66%)
- In the 25 fatal incidents reported, only 6 included passengers wearing PFDs
- Alcohol was reported in 4 of the fatal incidents

On the Road, On the Water, Don’t Drink and Drive is led in North Carolina by the NCWRC, N.C. State Highway Patrol, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and local police and sheriff’s offices.

Safe Kids Orange member, Heather Reigg, hosted the hot car awareness display outside of the Orange County Library in Hillsborough....the inside of the vehicle reached over 137 degrees after just a few hours on a cooler day this month. A reminder of how dangerous our vehicles can get in these summer months.

Safe Kids Orange was busy this past Friday....18 car seat checks provided with families during the Orange Social Services "Be Well" event in Hillsborough, a bike safety rodeo during the Town of Carrboro Mental Health Fair, and a documentary screening focused on gun violence and school safety with Durham's Firearm Safety Team during the May Day Conference. Thank you to all our members for making this all happen!
