It’s always a full house when Holden Thorp speaks. The former Chancellor of UNC and current editor of Scientific American shared thoughtful reflections on his career in science and higher education—and spoke openly about living with autism, offering a candid and inspiring perspective on leadership, curiosity, and embracing how we think differently.

When the call went out about a severe blood shortage, East Chapel Hill Rotary and the Sancar Turkish Cultural & Community Center stepped up to support the American Red Cross. Thank you to Brenz Pizza, Jerry Mike’s, and the many community members who rolled up their sleeves to help make a difference. Thanks Sancar Turkish Cultural and Community Center - STCCC

Exploring Rotary Fellowships: Connecting Members Worldwide!

Rotary Fellowships https://www.facebook.com/FellowshipsRotary/ are special groups within Rotary that let members connect with others who share their interests and passions. These fellowships cover a wide range of topics, including hobbies, sports, and professional fields. Each fellowship is like a smaller community within the larger Rotary organization, where members can make friends and work together.

The main goal of Rotary Fellowships is to make the Rotary experience more enjoyable by allowing members to do activities they love while also promoting service and understanding around the world. These fellowships encourage members to explore their interests beyond regular Rotary projects, helping them make deeper connections and friendships. By joining these groups, members can meet new people from different cultures and backgrounds.

One big benefit of joining a Rotary Fellowship is the chance to grow personally and professionally. Members can take part in various activities, events, and projects that match their interests. Our club has rcently focused attention on the International Fellowship of Curling Rotarians https://www.facebook.com/groups/2289172631436945 because we have members competing for the World Championship in April in Scotland, but there are over 100 other fellowships. For example, the International Fellowship of Rotarian Scuba Divers https://www.facebook.com/groups/150959392719 organizes diving trips and underwater clean-up projects, combining a love for diving with helping the environment. These activities are fun and fulfilling while helping the community and the world.

Rotary Fellowships also help promote international cooperation and understanding. By connecting members from different countries, these fellowships help break down cultural barriers and promote global peace. Through shared activities and projects, members gain a broader perspective on global issues and develop a sense of unity and teamwork. This fits with Rotary International's mission of promoting world peace and understanding through community service.

Additionally, Rotary Fellowships give members a platform to share their expertise and knowledge. Professionals from different fields can work together on projects, exchange ideas, and offer mentorship to other members. This sharing of knowledge and experience enriches the fellowship community and helps members grow professionally. For example, the Rotary Fellowship of Healthcare Professionals http://www.rotaryhealthprofessionals.org/ allows doctors and nurses to work together on health projects and share best practices, improving healthcare in different regions.

Besides the professional and service-oriented benefits, Rotary Fellowships provide a sense of belonging and community. Members often form lasting friendships through their shared interests and activities. These relationships are especially valuable for Rotary members who travel often or move to new places, as they can easily connect with fellowship members in new locations. The sense of camaraderie and support in these groups makes the overall Rotary experience better and strengthens the global Rotary network.

Rotary Fellowships are an important part of Rotary International, offering members unique opportunities to connect, learn, and serve. By joining a fellowship, Rotary members can pursue their passions, work on meaningful projects, and build international friendships. These fellowships promote service, professional development, and global understanding, making them an essential part of the Rotary experience. Whether through professional collaborations or shared hobbies, Rotary Fellowships enrich members' lives and positively impact communities worldwide.

We were honored and blessed with Alfred Scott McLaren as a member of East Chapel Hill Rotary Club, an amazing person who enjoyed sharing stories with other members but from this New York Times obituary it's clear he didn't share them all! Fred passed in September of last year. RIP.

He participated in the first baseball game at the North Pole. Later, he became an expert in the impact of climate change on Arctic ice sheets.
