Countless stories, one shared legacy. 🕯️

Join us at Chalmette Battlefield on Veterans Day, November 11th, for a moving tribute honoring the many stories of service, sacrifice and courage that unite our nation’s veterans. The event is part of the Great American Expedition and Freedom 250 celebrations.

More than 2,000 luminarias will illuminate the battlefield, representing the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our nation.

Beyond the luminarias on the battlefield, there will be special illuminations of the Chalmette Monument, the Malus-Beauregard House, and the American flag as we reflect on the people that have shaped our nation's story more than most others.

This will be an exclusive driving tour event. A special audio tour will be available on our park website. QR codes will be provided.

October 18, 1776 — Glover Buys Washington More Time at Pell’s Point

Two hundred and fifty years ago today, a small American force delayed a much larger British army, giving George Washington precious time to continue his retreat toward White Plains.

After six frustrating days stranded at Throgs Neck, General William Howe loaded his army back onto transports and landed about 4,000 British and Hessian troops at Pell’s Point, hoping to get around Washington’s flank and cut off the Continental Army.

Instead, they ran into Colonel John Glover and about 750 Continental soldiers, many of them veterans of the Marblehead Regiment that had helped ferry Washington’s army to safety after the Battle of Long Island.

Using the stone walls that divided the countryside, Glover organized a series of delaying positions. His men fired disciplined volleys at close range, then withdrew to the next wall before the British could overwhelm them. The process was repeated several times, forcing Howe’s much larger force to fight for every few hundred yards.

Although the Americans eventually withdrew, they had accomplished exactly what Washington needed. Howe’s advance was slowed for another day, allowing the Continental Army to continue moving toward White Plains instead of risking encirclement on Manhattan.

The action at Pell’s Point demonstrated that disciplined troops using favorable terrain could frustrate even the world’s most powerful army. Just as importantly, it helped preserve Washington’s army—the Revolution’s most valuable asset—for the battles still to come.

And that’s the way it was, October 18, 1776.
