St. Bernard Firefighters were recently Recognized for Lifesaving Actions Following a Motorcycle Crash

The St. Bernard Firefighters Association is proud to recognize Captain Brett Fassbender and Engineer Paul Royer for their outstanding actions during a recent motorcycle accident that ultimately helped save a life.

Captain Fassbender and Engineer Royer were recently honored by University Medical Center (UMC) for their quick thinking, professionalism, and exceptional patient care provided at the scene of a serious motorcycle crash. Upon arriving at the incident, the firefighters immediately assessed the patient's injuries and identified a severe extremity hemorrhage that required urgent intervention.

Understanding that uncontrolled bleeding can become life-threatening within minutes, Captain Fassbender and Engineer Royer rapidly applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding while continuing to provide medical care and stabilization until the patient could be transported for definitive treatment. Their prompt actions played a critical role in preventing further blood loss and greatly improved the patient's chances for recovery.

University Medical Center recognized both firefighters for their commitment to excellence and dedication to serving the citizens and visitors of St. Bernard Parish. Their actions exemplify the high level of training, professionalism, and compassion demonstrated daily by the members of the St. Bernard Fire Firefighters l.

"We are incredibly proud of Captain Fassbender and Engineer Royer," said St Bernard Professional Firefighters Union President Jason Mones. "Their ability to remain calm under pressure and provide lifesaving care is a testament to the dedication and training of our firefighters."

The actions taken by Captain Fassbender and Engineer Royer highlight the importance of the Stop the Bleed program, a national public awareness campaign designed to teach individuals how to recognize and control life-threatening bleeding before emergency responders arrive.

Research has shown that severe bleeding can cause death in as little as five minutes, making immediate intervention critical.

🌪️ St. Bernard Parish Storm Update 🌪️

Our community experienced a tornado touchdown today, leaving damage in St. Bernard Parish. We are grateful that crews have been working tirelessly to respond and begin recovery efforts.

At this time:

⚡ Approximately 2,200 homes remain without power. Entergy is working to restore power to affected customers.

🏠 Five homes sustained severe roof damage, while additional homes experienced missing shingles, downed trees, damaged fences, and other storm-related impacts.

We want to extend our sincere thanks to The Home Depot for stepping up and delivering much-needed supplies to assist residents whose homes were damaged by the storms. Your generosity is making a difference when it's needed most.

A special thank you also goes to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office for keeping damaged roadways closed and helping ensure the safety of residents while Entergy crews work to restore power.

We are incredibly grateful to our St. Bernard Fire Department, Entergy lineworkers, public works crews, emergency personnel, and all first responders who have been working to respond to emergencies, clear hazards, and help our community recover.

Thank you, St. Bernard, for looking out for one another. We'll continue to share updates as more information becomes available. 💙
