On September 14th, 2026, the R/V Neil Armstrong departed Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)’s dock for a 21-day research cruise in the Gulf of Maine. Follow Jennifer Miksis-Olds (University of New Hampshire), the Chief Scientist of this trip, and multiple groups onboard from University of New Hampshire, JASCO Applied Sciences, Applied Research Lab at Penn State, Portland State University, Stony Brook University, and the US Geological Survey as they conduct various studies and share some of their observations on this blog. This marks the R/V Armstrong’s 103rd operational cruise since it was built.

The Shelf to Shore project maintains acoustic and ocean observation assets across the Gulf of Maine, conducts localized measurements of seabed acoustics and geoacoustics, and investigates the unique, complex interactions of very shallow water processes.
