Central Rivers Area Education Agency

Central Rivers AEA serves over 62,000 students. A nine-member board of directors is elected by local school boards to govern budget decisions.

In addition, over 5,000 educators rely on our services in special education, school technology, media, and instructional/curriculum support. Central Rivers AEA is one of nine Area Education Agencies created in 1974 by the Iowa legislature to ensure equal educational opportunities for all children from birth through age 21. Support to local schools is provided through three service areas: Education

al Services, Information & Technology and Special Education. Area Education Agencies are funded from federal-aid and state-aid payments; legislatively controlled property tax; federal, state and private grants; and tuition for classes. The chief administrator handles the daily operation of the agency's divisions, each of which is headed by a director. In addition to the main office in Cedar Falls, the agency also has main offices in Marshalltown and Clear Lake. Central Rivers AEA Facebook Guidelines

✨ 𝐖𝐞'𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤! ✨

Today, Central Rivers AEA staff came together to kick off the 2026–27 school year with a powerful reminder of the difference we make – individually and together.

Chief Administrator Karl Kurt challenged us to consider: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫? Our impact isn’t always found in the big, “commercial-worthy” moments. More often, it happens quietly – in the teacher we encourage, the family we support, the problem we help solve or the student whose path changes because someone showed up at just the right time. We may not always get to see the ripple, but the impact is real. 🙌

Dr. Mary Stevens, former Executive Director of Special Education and current Board Vice President, reminded us that Central Rivers AEA has weathered plenty of storms in its 51-year history.

Through every change, our “why” has remained the same: 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧, 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬. Our legacy has been built day by day through relationships, collaboration, innovation and resilience – and the experts we need are often sitting right next to us.

As Mary passed the baton to today’s staff, she reminded us that our roots are strong – and our best work is still ahead.

So here’s to a new school year. To remembering our why. To finding joy in the work. To taking risks, supporting one another and making the everyday moments count. 👏

These specialists provide hands-on technical support to keep classroom tools like laptops and projectors running smoothly for teachers and students. With a focus on friendly service and clear communication, they manage equipment and networks to ensure technology stays out of the way of learning. 🙌

Kick off your teaching journey with our Mentoring and Induction Program (Year 1), designed specifically for first-year educators and their mentors.

Running across four in-person sessions from 9:00 am–3:00 pm, this program will be available at all of our Central Rivers AEA offices.

We are here to help you navigate your first year by sharing practical classroom strategies, tackling daily challenges together and guiding you smoothly toward your standard teaching license.

You’ll get the coaching, skills, and community to help your students succeed and feel confident – plus, you can earn renewal or graduate credits!

For high school students, transitioning into the working world can feel like a massive leap. That’s why the Central Rivers AEA work-based learning program partners with local businesses to give students early, hands-on experience in fields they love. 🙌

From producing broadcast TV commercials at Amperage Marketing to tackling real-world building projects at Steege Construction Inc., local students like Grady and Taylor are finding their future career paths.
