Off The Page is one of a series of public programs hosted by CREATE alongside Seen Scenes—our 2026 member show at the Kinderhook Knitting Mill. These interactive events are designed to expand engagement, foster community, and highlight a range of artistic practices!

Off The Page invites creatives working in literary media to share their work through live readings and spoken performance, expanding the exhibition beyond the gallery walls.

Participating artists are encouraged to reflect on the exhibition theme—Seen Scenes—as a starting point for poetry, prose, spoken word, and other short literary presentations shared with a live audience.

🙋 How do I participate?
Submit a proposal through the “Open Calls” link in our bio, describing your practice and the work you’d like to present. Up to 4 participants will be selected & each individual is invited to share up to 7 minutes of material.

Vanessa Irena (she/they) is a multidisciplinary artist, musician, and writer originally from New Orleans, LA. After many years in New York City, she moved upstate in 2021 and began teaching herself to make jewelry using the ancient method of lost wax casting in 2024. Her work is inspired by ancient charms and amulets, and the talismanic practices of the Medieval and Renaissance, including pieces made to precise astrological timing. Each piece begins as a hand-sculpted wax model crafted in her home studio in Athens, NY before being cast into solid sterling silver and bronze.

CREATE member Besty Jacks' (.jacks) painting "The Return, After Thomas Cole," on view in "Here For You" at CCE CG, a group exhibition on care and connection comprised of artworks by fifteen artists from Columbia and Greene County.

"This artwork is based on Thomas Cole paintings, which include messages of caring, as expressed by the trees. I believe Cole used his foreground trees to embody his emotions, as he empathized with them to an extreme degree. In a poem, he described the woods as “a silent people,” and Cole, in looking at them, was “entranced in thoughts too glad for utterance.” The painting is inspired by “The Return”, in which a wounded knight returns home. In the foreground, Cole has inserted a plantain plant, used for millennia for healing, especially to halt bleeding in wounds. In my painting, I have enlarged the healing herb and included other symbols of caretaking and hope that Cole depicted, such as the golden sky, the spires of a cathedral, and birds taking flight. The trees themselves are engaged in a complex embrace of care."
