Freedom Guide Dogs provides professionally trained guide dogs at no cost to blind & visually impaired individuals. www.freedomguidedogs.org

Based in upstate NY, we bring personalized Hometown Training directly to clients across the Eastern U.S. Freedom's Hometown Training program allows a certified guide dog instructor to bring a trained guide dog right to the blind person's home where they train for 2 weeks in a familiar, home setting. This is at no cost to the client.

September is National Guide Dog Month 🦮💙

Much like a lighthouse serves as a beacon, helping sailors navigate their way safely, a guide dog provides direction, confidence, and a trusted path forward for a person who is blind or visually impaired.

A lighthouse does not choose the sailor’s destination. It simply helps illuminate the way. In much the same way, a guide dog does not decide where their handler is going. The handler gives the direction, and together, they navigate the journey safely as a team.

Throughout National Guide Dog Month, we celebrate the extraordinary dogs who dedicate their lives to guiding, the people who place their trust in them, and the incredible partnership that makes greater independence possible.

At Freedom Guide Dogs, our commitment to our dogs is lifelong. 💙🐾

Placement is not the end of their journey with Freedom. It is simply the beginning of a new chapter.

Throughout the life of every Freedom dog, we remain here to provide support for both our dogs and our guide dog teams. Whether a dog needs a familiar place to stay while their handler travels, a little brush-up training, additional support along the way, or it is time to hang up the harness and enjoy a well-earned retirement, our doors are always open.

When one of our dogs needs to come home to Freedom, for any reason and at any stage of life, we will always welcome them back with open arms.

These dogs are not just part of our program while they are training. They are part of the Freedom family for life.

Honoring Eric Loori and His Extraordinary Legacy of Service 💙

We are incredibly proud to share two very special recognitions honoring the life, work, and legacy of Eric Loori.

Eric was posthumously selected as the 2026 recipient of the Ethel Bender Award, presented by Guide Dog Users, Inc. (GDUI). This meaningful award recognizes significant service toward enhancing the well-being of the guide dog and handler partnership, something Eric dedicated his life and career to.

This recognition comes alongside another incredibly special honor. This past May, in Yokohama, Japan, attending the International Guide Dog Federation Conference, Eric was recognized for an extraordinary 43 years of service to the guide dog world.

Forty-three years.

For more than four decades, Eric dedicated himself to guide dogs, the people who rely on them, and the partnerships that provide independence, confidence, and freedom. His influence reached far beyond Freedom Guide Dogs and touched the international guide dog community.

Although Eric is no longer here to receive the Ethel Bender Award himself, seeing his life’s work continue to be recognized is incredibly meaningful to all of us who knew him, worked alongside him, and continue the mission he cared so deeply about.

These honors represent more than milestones in a remarkable career. They represent 43 years of lives changed, partnerships created, knowledge shared, and an unwavering commitment to the guide dog movement.

Eric’s legacy is woven into the work we do every day, and it will continue through the people he mentored, the programs he helped shape, and the countless guide dog teams whose lives were impacted by his dedication.

We are so proud to see Eric and his 43 years of service honored by the guide dog community he devoted his life to. His legacy will continue to guide us for generations to come. 🦮💙
