Today is Four Chaplains Day.

Four Chaplains Day, as U.S. Congress has declared, honors the four chaplains who went down with their ship and gave their life jackets to other passengers.

The Four Chaplains on board the ship were Reverend George L. Fox of the Methodist faith, Jewish Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Father John P. Washington of the Catholic faith, and Reverend Clark V. Poling from the Dutch Reformed Church.

On Feb. 3, 1943, at 12:55 a.m., German submarine U-223 torpedoed the Dorchester off the coast of Newfoundland. When the supply of life jackets ran out before each man had one, the chaplains removed their own life jackets and gave them to others. When last seen, they were standing together on the deck leading the men in prayer.

On leaving the Festival grounds Sunday I stopped by the Hibernian site and happened to see a memorial slgn to the memory of Matt Sullivan..who got the whole Festival ball rolling. I photographed the sign and remaining guys in the shelter... Having not seen his ladyfriend Sharon since a political meeting in march which she was photographing for MVCC, I decided to send her the photos so she would know her fella was well remembered. Upon receiving the photos she wrote back to me ,,and I will be quick to say, all of us and , in her email said: "
"Thanks for the photos Tom! Do you have any idea who thought of that and who made the sign? I’d like to send them a thank you."
Let me know who did it so she can thank them.. and I think that , without speaking for you..we.could say that the membership is in agreement with the sentiments expressed by and on the sign That might take a meeting vote, but let's tell her who came up with the idea and posted the sign, OK? Here are the photos I sent her.

The New York State Ancient Order of Hibernians elected Thomas Lambert of Erie County as the new state president, while the Ladies AOH elected Mary Beth Durkee of Rensselaer County.
