We are deeply honored to be the inaugural recipient of the Knox Williams Philanthropy Award from the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation. 💚

Named in honor of longtime Carlsbad philanthropist and community leader Knox Williams, this new annual award recognizes an organization whose service and commitment make a meaningful impact in the Carlsbad community. Knox was also a founding chairman of the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation and helped shape its legacy of local giving.

For Hospice of the North Coast, this recognition is especially meaningful because Knox was much more than a community leader. He was a longtime supporter, trusted advisor, and dear friend of our organization.

Knox’s connection with HNC began in 1999, when his son received hospice care. In the years that followed, he became a passionate supporter of our mission and someone whose kindness, generosity, humor, and commitment to community left a lasting impression on all of us.

To now receive the first award bearing his name is a profound honor.

We are grateful to the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation and its members for this recognition, and to our staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, patients, and families who make our work possible every day.

We are proud to continue serving and investing in the community Knox cared so deeply about. 💚

Compassionate care is often found in the details.

It can be a conversation that brings clarity, relief from a difficult symptom, support for an overwhelmed caregiver, or simply having someone there when a family needs them.

Hospice and palliative care are about more than managing illness. They are about supporting the person, the family, and the moments that matter.

Compassionate care is never the work of just one person.

Hospice and palliative care bring together professionals with different areas of expertise, all working toward a shared goal: supporting the physical, emotional, social, and practical needs of patients and families.

From nurses and physicians to social workers, care advocates, volunteers, and bereavement support staff, every role brings something important to the care experience.

This week, we’re recognizing the people behind the care.

Serious illness can bring a lot of questions, including what kind of support may be available.

Hospice care and palliative care both focus on comfort and quality of life, but they are designed for different stages and needs.

Palliative care can be provided alongside ongoing treatment, while hospice care focuses on comfort when an illness has advanced and goals of care have shifted.

Swipe through for a simple look at the difference.

“Hospice means giving up.”
That’s a common misconception.
Hospice care is not about giving up. It is about shifting the focus toward comfort, dignity, quality of life, and support for both patients and families when an illness has advanced.
Hospice can help manage symptoms, provide emotional and spiritual support, assist family caregivers, and help people spend meaningful time in the place they call home whenever possible.
This week, leading up to World Hospice & Palliative Care Day, we’re sharing simple facts to help make these types of care easier to understand.

A safer home can start with a few simple changes.

During Fall Prevention Awareness Week, we’re sharing practical ways to help reduce fall risks at home, from clearing walkways and improving lighting to reviewing medications and paying attention to changes in mobility.

Frequent falls can sometimes signal changing health or care needs. If you notice new weakness, balance problems, or repeated falls, consider talking with your healthcare team.

Save or share this checklist with a caregiver, family member, or friend who may find it helpful.
