Today Deputy Chief Houle and Captain Byam met with Carlisle Fire Chief Sorrows and Lieutenant Gibson, along with Westford Deputy Chief Svatek, on Gage Lane and Northview Ave in South Chelmsford. This stretch of town has no municipal hydrants, so the group came together to discuss alternative water supply options and coordinated response planning.

Carlisle operates without hydrants across the entire town and brings experience in rural water supply, including tanker operations, portable pumps, drafting, and responds with apparatus carrying thousands of feet of large diameter hose. Given that this area sits near the Carlisle town line and shares a section of road with Westford, bringing all three departments to the table made sense. This would be a Chelmsford response, with Westford responding through mutual aid and Carlisle special called for water supply on a working fire.

This discussion builds on outreach to Carlisle Fire that began earlier this year in order to gain a better understanding of their capabilities, and this new partnership will not end today. We are now planning a joint drill so the strategies discussed can be tested for effectiveness and practiced by personnel from all three departments before they are ever needed on an actual incident.

Options for alternative water supply sources cannot simply be dictated by geographical location or the size of area departments. Preparedness comes from planning and training together before an incident, not from assumptions about what a neighboring department can bring. Grateful to Carlisle and Westford for their partnership on this.

**UPDATE: PATCH STILL AT LARGE**
Treasure Hunt Thursday Week 7! In the penultimate treasure hunt of 2026, we will travel across borders, over dams, and through the woods to what was once the sight of a historic barn. While there, enjoy the breathtaking view of the pond near where it was located. The Greenough Land is the largest parcel owned by the Town of Carlisle and was purchased in 1973. Please stay off private property!

If you are the lucky treasure hunter to have sleuthed out the patch’s location and find it, you will be rewarded with one of the following prizes:

1.) A personal meet and greet with K9 Officer Eric Koukos and K9 Athena
Or
2.) A personal demonstration of the Carlisle Police Department Drone
Or
3.) A ride to school in a police cruiser for up to two students (restrictions may apply)

A code has been left with the patch, follow the instructions on the letter and redeem your prize! We encourage the finder to take a selfie with the patch to show off their great achievement! There is no age limit, and we encourage this to be a family affair. Happy Treasure Hunting!

Looking for something to do this weekend?
The Apollo Ensemble of Boston will perform a concert on August 15 at 1 p.m., featuring works by Bizet, de Falla, and others. The concert will take place at the Pavilion of Great Brook Farm State Park, 165 North Road.

The Apollo Ensemble of Boston is a full symphony orchestra that performs summer concerts in Carlisle and regular-season concerts in Jamaica Plain and Cambridge. On Saturday, August 15 at 1 p.m. they will perform works by Georges Bizet (L’Arlesienne, Suites No. 1 and 2), Manuel de Falla (Three-Cornered Hat, Suites No. 1 and 2), Geronimo Gimenez (Intermedio from La Boda de Luis Alonso), and Gabriela Lena Frank (Elegia Andina). West Nile Virus Confirmed in Mosquitoes from Carlisle

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) announced today that West Nile virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquitoes collected from Carlisle, Massachusetts.

WNV is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquitoes that carry this virus are common throughout the state and are found in urban as well as more rural areas. While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe infection.
