Hard work by the men and women of multiple law enforcement agencies have solved a recent murder. Responsible criticism pursues resolution. BACK THE BLUE.
𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱
Following the incident that occurred in downtown Cape Girardeau this past weekend, there have been some misconceptions regarding the law enforcement presence and proactive police activity in the area.
During the evening of September 26th into the early morning hours of September 27th, the Cape Girardeau Police Department had five officers in the downtown area, in addition to multiple officers with the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and our federal law enforcement partners.
Our officers remain committed to being proactive in an effort to prevent crime, and this weekend was no different. Between 8:00 p.m. on September 26th and 2:00 a.m. on September 27th, CGPD Officers conducted 26 vehicle stops throughout the city. This number does not include vehicle stops conducted by other law enforcement agencies within Cape Girardeau.
Vehicle stops are an important part of proactive policing and can provide officers opportunities to identify impaired drivers, recover illegal weapons or narcotics, and locate individuals with outstanding warrants.
Following the incident, the Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad was activated to assist with the investigation. During the investigation, detectives encountered challenges with available surveillance footage, particularly in the downtown area, where several businesses did not have cameras or footage was unavailable for review.
Despite those challenges, investigators worked diligently and, within 72 hours, developed and apprehended a suspect in connection with the incident.
The Cape Girardeau Police Department will continue working proactively to prevent crime and keep our community safe not only in the downtown area, but throughout the City of Cape Girardeau. Over the next few weeks more officers will be assigned to the downtown area and city leaders are working together for a more permanent solution.
