Happy 🚜 although farmers are outstanding in their fields 365 days a year!
There's a lot more to farming than what meets the eye
Agriculture is a highly complex field. It's not as simple as throw seeds on ground 🌱 + weather 🌦️= food🍞, or cow 🐄+ grass = milk🥛.
Farmers make up less than 2% of the U.S. population. In order for the 2% to feed 100%, there are a lot of moving parts and details to get right.
Farmers need to be knowledgeable in animal care, agronomy, soil science, natural resources, food safety, business management, finances, mechanics/engineering, policy, marketing, etc.
This knowledge can come from both formal and informal education. That can be college, technical schools, apprenticeships, internships, extension programs, experience, etc. Often it's a mix of multiple methods.
My dad has a Bachelors & my mom has a Masters in agricultural fields, and many years of experience (I probably shouldn't say how many😆) owning and operating our farm and growing up on their families' farms.
My brother has his Bachelors and is full time managing the farm as well.
Growing up on a farm is how you get almost as many years of work experience as you've lived!
I'm currently working on my 4th animal science degree (my PhD), because I'm extra and like school too much 🙃. The main thing I've learned is there's so much out there to learn & discover about agriculture. The more you know, the more you see what you don't know.
If you have questions about agriculture, go to the root and ask a farmer (or agriculturalist)!
