Campus Kitchens stands with the Black Lives Matter movement and recognizes the intersection of race and food insecurity. The organization’s mission is to alleviate food insecurity and reduce food waste by serving free meals made from recovered food that would otherwise be thrown out. We’re committed to understanding and addressing the root causes of hunger in our services — many of which are imbedded in structural racism.

Food insecurity is a class-based issue — and it is impossible to understand class-based issues without considering how race and class interact and intersect. The Campus Kitchen at SLU is situated in a rural, predominantly white community and serves a mostly white population at its meals. However, when looking at the issue nationally, food insecurity exists in only 8.1% of white households, but 21.2% of black households. Even more staggering, 29.3% of black children, but only 11.8% of white children are in food insecure households.

Hunger is a multidisciplinary issue that requires interdisciplinary solutions. The issue is global and local, existing in urban and rural environments. Providing effective solutions to hunger is not one-size-fits-all — even within the Campus Kitchens network, chapters have different ways of preparing and serving meals that suit the needs of their community.

Going forward, it is imperative that the Campus Kitchen at SLU recognizes and incorporates the relationship between race and food insecurity into its program. This starts with education and evolves into action.

We have provided some resources that we found helpful in understanding the intersection of race and food insecurity and welcome any other resources, feedback, and ideas.
