Meet Arlo! Arlo is a 6 year old male Weimaraner with a whole entire full tail! He also has a big of extra baggage he's been carrying around for a bit which results in him weighing in at just over 100 pounds but we shall speak of that later....He is a brilliant boy, everything a Weim should be and then some!
Arlo's original owner got himself in a little bit of trouble and had to go away. Arlo was taken in by friends, but it became financially impossible for them to care for him any longer. Owner and friend then decided it was best for Arlo to find a new place, so he came to Angels for just that reason!
It must be said that despite the series of unfortunate events that befell Arlo, he had a great upbringing in the early days of his life. He is well trained and incredibly sweet. His first owner did an outstanding job helping Arlo to be a good canine citizen for sure! And before anyone decides to make any sort of comment -- we are aware that Arlo's nails are on the VERY long side - we are working on them and they will be back to an acceptable length very soon!
Arlo has wonderful manners, walks really well on a leash (if he even pulls at all and you just say his name, he stops immediately!), is house trained and has wonderful manners in the home. He's a superstar! He is very social, loves people, has lived with other dogs, and is even cat safe. He loves toys, loves to play catch, has an outstanding time looking for a running after squirrels, and loves to ride in the car. He will bark when he sees strangers coming to the house, but it quickly turns to friendly wiggles of HELLO!!! He has been left loose in the home when everyone was gone and showed no poor behaviors!
Now the elephant in the room (no pun intended). Arlo is a tad overweight. By a tad we mean approximately 25 pounds, give or take. One thing that tends to be true about weims, is the fact that they live to eat. Looks like Arlo has done a lot of living. Coupled with lack of real exercise, his overeating has resulted in Arlo being a bit of a wide load. We know that given some time, exercise, and a sensible diet, Arlo will hit his target weight. We figure he should probably slim down to around 80 pounds give or take.
This means that we are looking for a few specific things for Arlo. First off, we want someone who understands this breed or even breeds closely related to them such as German Shorthaired Pointers or Vizslas. They are active sporting dogs with exceptional brains. Brains that can, and sometimes are, used for mischief. This breed requires an owner with a sense of humor - and they WILL make you laugh! They are consummate problem solvers, tend to think outside the box, and can be more than a little manipulative (which may be how some of them get a little chubby hahaha!). Brilliant though. Absolutely brilliant. They also tend to bond very strongly with their humans. If you are somewhere, they are in the exact same place. You may never go to the bathroom alone again. Velcro dogs to the core, their loyalty to their family knows no bounds. Arlo is no exception - he has already developed close relationships with his caregivers here at the shelter, and will no doubt do the same with his lucky new family.
We also would like to place him with someone who is as dedicated to helping him get back into shape as we would be. He is a vibrant adult dog with many many years ahead of him. He needs a family that will get him plenty of exercise, building up over time, and make sure that he simultaneously gets a sensible diet. This doesn't mean the good boy can't have treats - he would just do best with healthy low calorie treats and perhaps a few less of them. Fewer incidences of between meal snacking! With proper care, this boy will shed the excess and be the lean athletic grey ghost he was always meant to be!
