It is with profound sadness that the Fairfield Police Department announces the passing of Officer John French.

Officer French was more than a member of our department, he was a dedicated public servant, a trusted colleague, and a valued friend. Throughout his service, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to protecting our community and serving others with professionalism, integrity, and compassion. His loss is deeply felt by every member of our department and by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Officer French's family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We ask our community to keep them, along with our officers and professional staff, in your thoughts and prayers as we grieve this tremendous loss together.

As we mourn the loss of Officer French, we also celebrate a life dedicated to service. His commitment to this profession and to the people of Fairfield will not be forgotten, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who serve alongside us.

On behalf of the men and women of the Fairfield Police Department, thank you for your continued support, prayers, and respect for Officer French's family and our department during this time of mourning.

Wayne County Sherrif Tom Ballinger has updated what happened to K-9 Officer Vick during the gunfire.

They are trying to get K-9 Vick stable before they consider surgery, and should know more in the next 12 to 24 hours.

“He’s a very valuable asset to out agency,” Ballinger said. “Loyal, he’s extremely loyal, not just to his handler but very loyal to the department. It’s sad to see him going through this.”

The Sheriff’s K9 unit is paid for through a separate fund.

Any donations of checks, cash or money orders can be made out to the “Wayne County Sheriff’s Office K9 Fund,” and sent to 201 W. North Steet, Wooster, Ohio, 44691.
