ICYMI: In May, Governor Hochul announced that she had requested a USDA Disaster Designation for counties in the Hudson Valley, Capital Region, Central New York, Southern Tier, and Western New York regions. The request was in response to frost conditions in April that significantly impacted many fruit operations, including apple, stone fruit, grape, and strawberry growers. A Disaster Designation would allow affected farmers to apply for USDA low-interest emergency loans.

New York is a major specialty crop state. The apple, grape, and stone fruit industries represent an important and large component of New York’s agricultural economy. While we continue to monitor reports of damage, and await an update on the disaster designation, we encourage New Yorkers to continue their support for local growers, whether by buying fresh products from a farm in your community or seeking out products grown and produced here in New York State.

🚨 Support for small meat and poultry processing plants is here!

Secretary Rollins today launched the Small Processors Action Plan, a new set of actions designed to make it easier for these businesses to interact with USDA, get timely answers, and resolve issues, without weakening inspection or food safety standards.

Additionally, we've announced $60M in funding through the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program to expand American meat and poultry processing. Applications will be accepted through Aug. 7, 2026.

🌽 The 2026 Sweet Corn Trapping Network is officially underway!

Now in its 33rd year, the network monitors the major insect pests of sweet corn at 33 sites across New York using pheromone traps. From now through the third week of September, weekly trap reports will help growers stay ahead of pest pressure and make informed management decisions throughout the season.

Traps are beginning to come online statewide, and the first corn earworm moths of the season have already been captured in Hurley, NY. As temperatures warm and more sweet corn is planted, monitoring activity will continue to increase.

You can follow weekly trap catches and updates here: https://blogs.cornell.edu/scptnetwork/

We’re also asking growers, gardeners, and others involved in sweet corn production to complete a short survey on research, extension and trapping needs. Your feedback will help guide future improvements and support continued funding for the network.

Take the survey here: https://cornell.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6sBklolcQxK1si2

πŸ“Έ In this photo, traps are set beside sweet corn growing under row cover β€” a technique used by some growers to protect young plants from cool spring temperatures and encourage an earlier harvest.

Mental health matters in agriculture. πŸ’šA survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation reveals that 46% of farmers and farmworkers find it difficult to access a therapist or counselor. Distance, stigma, and cost should never stand in the way of well-being.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, remember that you do not have to carry the weight alone. NY FarmNet is here to provide free, confidential, and specialized support tailored directly to the farming community. 🌾🚜
