ICYMI: In May, Governor Hochul announced that she had requested a USDA Disaster Designation for counties in the Hudson Valley, Capital Region, Central New York, Southern Tier, and Western New York regions. The request was in response to frost conditions in April that significantly impacted many fruit operations, including apple, stone fruit, grape, and strawberry growers. A Disaster Designation would allow affected farmers to apply for USDA low-interest emergency loans.
New York is a major specialty crop state. The apple, grape, and stone fruit industries represent an important and large component of New Yorkβs agricultural economy. While we continue to monitor reports of damage, and await an update on the disaster designation, we encourage New Yorkers to continue their support for local growers, whether by buying fresh products from a farm in your community or seeking out products grown and produced here in New York State.
