Sarah's Cause

Sarah's Cause Raise awareness of sepsis and donations for local animal shelters in memory of Sarah Jayne Orton Sarah died unexpectedly of sepsis on 10/10/13.

Sarah was born on May 15, 2008 - for her 5th birthday she asked her friends instead of giving her gifts, if they could give her donations to take to the Baltimore Humane Society. She knew that is where her dog scooter was adopted from in 2001, so she wanted to help Scooters second family. So in Sarah's honor we have created an organization to carry on this tradition to raise money for local humane societies in Sarah's name - namely Stray Haven in NY and the Baltimore Humane Society in MD.

Today is a day of immense pride, deep reflection, and a milestone we always envisioned but have to mark a little differently. Today, our sweet Sarah Jayne would have graduated from high school alongside the Westminster High School Class of 2026.

Thirteen years ago, when Sarah was a vibrant five-year-old kindergartener at Mechanicsville Elementary, we lost her to sepsis. The hole left in our hearts never goes away, but we made a promise that her name, her spirit, and her kindness would never be forgotten.

Because this is the year Sarah should have been walking across that stage, last night’s Senior Awards Night was incredibly monumental for our family. To truly mark this milestone and ensure her light continues to shine, Sarah's Cause did something extra special with some funds raised from the last two MD Fundraisers; we awarded 5 distinct Sarah Jayne Orton Memorial Scholarships to 5 incredible seniors- Delaney Johnson, Allison Gill, Corrine Michael, Lily Easter & Lila Moxley.

Some of these graduates shared a playground sandbox with Sarah all those years ago; others learned her name for the first time last night. To all five recipients: you represent the future Sarah didn't get to live, and you embody the spark, potential, and heart she possessed. By carrying a piece of her legacy forward, you are now woven into her story, and she is a part of yours.

To the entire Class of 2026—and to everyone holding space for our girl today—remember to live fully, love fiercely, and celebrate every single milestone.

Congratulations to the graduates. We love you and miss you every day, Sarah.

THE DEVASTATING SPEED OF SEPSIS: A Wake-Up Call for Us All 💔🏁

The racing world and the nation are in absolute shock following the tragic passing of 2-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch at just 41 years old. Today, his family released a heartbreaking statement revealing that what began as severe pneumonia rapidly progressed into sepsis, leading to sudden, overwhelming complications.

Kyle was an elite, world-class athlete at the peak of his strength, yet sepsis took his life in a matter of days. If this tragedy teaches us anything, it is that sepsis does not discriminate, and it strikes with terrifying speed.
Sepsis is not a disease itself; it is the body’s extreme, life-threatening response to an infection (like pneumonia, the flu, a UTI, or even a small cut). When it triggers, it becomes a medical emergency where every single minute counts.

For every hour that treatment is delayed, the risk of death increases significantly. Sepsis must be treated with antibiotics and IV fluids IMMEDIATELY.

Please, protect yourself and your family by memorizing the S.E.P.S.I.S. symptoms:

S – Slurred speech or confusion
E – Extreme shivering or muscle pain/fever
P – Passing no urine (in a day)
S – Severe breathlessness
I – It feels like you’re going to die
S – Skin mottled or discolored

If you or a loved one are fighting an illness or infection and experience these symptoms, do not power through it. Go straight to the emergency room and ask the doctors explicitly: "Could this be sepsis?"

Our hearts and prayers go out to Samantha, Brexton, Lennix, and the entire Busch family. We continue our mission at Sarah's Cause to ensure no more families have to endure this unimaginable grief.

Please SHARE this post. Spreading this knowledge truly saves lives. ⏳❤️

This was another shelter we got to help on Sarah's birthday! Another stop we made on Friday for Sarah's birthday, wanted to reshare their post. We were glad we could help this beautiful rescue, she really appreciated everything we did from the monterey donation to supplies that were needed. What makes this rescue unique is she rescues the Amish pups that they don't sell, and not only that takes the dogs that were used for breeding. Please go check out her page, especially if you are looking for that special dog to join your family!

Normally we make our own post about doing the donation, but Paw Paw Canine Rescue & Recovery did such an amazing post we would like to share theirs. This was our third stop last Friday on Sarah's birthday. They are an amazing rescue who are helping dogs not only find homes, but find out what their issues might be first and work with them before finding their forever home! Check out their page and see what amazing things there are doing and what they have in-store for the future!
