💙Why Wednesday! 💙

This week, we're featuring Kathy Dennis and her reason for loving the work she does:

"Serving older adults is important to me because they have contributed so much to our communities and deserve dignity, respect, and support as they age. I am passionate about helping ensure they have access to the resources they need to remain safe, independent, and engaged in their daily lives.

AAA9 makes a meaningful difference by connecting individuals with vital services that improve their quality of life. Whether it's personal care, homemaking assistance, caregiver support, energy assistance, home-delivered meals, housing repairs, or medical equipment, our work helps older adults maintain their independence and dignity.

My faith has instilled in me the values of compassion and service to others. Knowing that my efforts can positively impact someone's life, especially during vulnerable times, makes my work incredibly rewarding. Every day presents an opportunity to help someone, solve problems, and collaborate with my team to make a real difference in the lives of those we serve.

Community resources are essential because they provide critical support systems, bridge gaps in care, reduce isolation, and ensure individuals receive the assistance they need. I enjoy giving back to my community in a meaningful way and seeing firsthand the positive impact our work has on people's lives.

Working at AAA9 has deepened my understanding of the challenges and needs of older adults in our communities. Aging services play a vital role in ensuring that older adults are not overlooked and have the support necessary to live with dignity, independence, and the quality of life they deserve. Knowing that I have helped someone feel supported, heard, and valued is what makes this work so fulfilling."

Thank you, Kathy, for your compassion, dedication, and commitment to supporting older adults, caregivers, and families throughout our communities. ❤️

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and the Area Agency on Aging, Region 9 want to remind older Ohioans that assistance is available to help with their home energy bills. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) helps Ohioans at or below 175% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for a household of up to seven members and 60% of State Median Income for a household of eight or more members to pay their heating bills.

Applied directly to the customer’s utility or bulk fuel bill, the benefit can help manage heating costs. Older Ohioans may go to their local Area Agency on Aging office for help with assembling the required documents and completing their HEAP application. They may also visit www.energyhelp.ohio.gov to apply online or to download a copy of the application.

When applying, individuals need to have copies of the following documents:
• Most recent utility bills.
• A list of all household members (including birth dates and Social Security numbers).
• Proof of income for the past 30 days for all household members (12 months for certain income types).
• Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency for all household members.
• Proof of disability (if applicable).

Applications for the HEAP program must be received by May 31, 2027.

For more information or assistance with applying for a HEAP benefit, contact the Area Agency on Aging, Region 9 at (800) 945-4250.

💜 National Family Caregivers Month 💜

This November, we recognize and celebrate the incredible family caregivers who provide unwavering support, compassion, and care to their loved ones every day. Whether you're helping with daily tasks, managing appointments, providing transportation, or simply offering a listening ear, your dedication makes a meaningful difference.

Family caregivers are the backbone of our communities, often balancing caregiving responsibilities alongside work, family, and personal commitments. This month, we thank you for the countless sacrifices you make and the love you share.

Take time this month to honor a caregiver in your life, offer support, and remind them that they are not alone.

Did you know that Medicare beneficiaries may be eligible for programs that help lower healthcare costs?

Through the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA), assistance is available for Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help, which can help eligible individuals pay for Medicare premiums, deductibles, copayments, and prescription drug costs.

If you or someone you know is struggling with healthcare expenses, our team may be able to help determine eligibility and connect you with available benefits.
Contact us today to learn more about MIPPA and the resources available to support older adults in our community.

🏆 Congratulations to the Anne Sonneborn Charitable Foundation and Area Agency on Aging Region 9, recipients of a 2026 o4a Partnership Award!

Every child deserves a safe, comfortable place to sleep. For grandparents and other older relatives raising children, providing those essentials can sometimes be a financial challenge.

Through a generous $15,000 grant, the Anne Sonneborn Charitable Foundation is helping sustain Area Agency on Aging Region 9's SleepWell Program, which provides beds, mattresses, and essential furnishings for children being raised by older relatives.

This partnership is making a meaningful difference for grandfamilies, helping older caregivers create safe, stable, and nurturing homes for the children in their care.

Congratulations to the Anne Sonneborn Charitable Foundation and Area Agency on Aging Region 9 for demonstrating how community partnerships can strengthen families and improve lives across generations!
