The proof: nearly 100 percent of Massachusetts Maritime Academy graduates are employed in well paying, career track positions within 90-days of graduation. The Regiment of Cadets and military-style uniforms play an important role in campus life at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. It reinforces that the status at the Academy is not an entitlement based on gender, race, or socio-economic class; it is earned through hard work, honor, and integrity. Though the Academy is structured as a military academy, designed to grow effective leaders, only cadets who volunteer for commissioning programs have military obligations during and after their time at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Through Sea Terms and Cooperative Education Programs, our undergraduates log 6 months of invaluable career experience during their 4-year pursuit of a Bachelor's Degree, often while traveling to a dozen or more countries. Upon graduation, our cadets are distinctly qualified to lead as licensed maritime professionals, skilled business managers, ship safety officers, commissioned military officers and more. Extracurricular activities are viewed as a way to cultivate pride in the Academy tradition as well as maintain the Academy's Tradition of Pride. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the wide variety of activities and athletics offered at MMA. An impressive 40% of cadets are athletes on one or more of our competitive NCAA and ECAC Division III college teams.

Our brand-new 3-in-1 Tugs and Towing Simulator is officially ready for action!

Under the instruction of Captain Zachary Dias, 1/C Cadets Seidell, Sandoz, and Weber put their ship handling skills to the test, conducting an Articulated Tug-Barge (ATB) docking in the Port of New York with ASD tug assistance.

This state-of-the-art simulator brings real-world maritime operations into the classroom, allowing cadets to execute full-scale towing and ship-assist maneuvers in a realistic, controlled environment. By applying skills developed in Bridge Resource Management, Navigation, ARPA, and Rules of the Road, cadets strengthen their shiphandling, decision-making, and watchstanding abilities.

And the opportunities don't stop there. Through elective courses Tugs I and Tugs II, cadets can pursue their Mate of Towing Vessels license, expanding their professional qualifications and opening doors to even more career opportunities in the maritime industry.

More hands-on experience. More specialized skills. More opportunities to lead on the water.

From Barge Moves to Dockside Maneuvers!

At Massachusetts Maritime Academy, hands-on learning isn't just encouraged, it's part of the experience!

In Onset, Tugs II 1/C cadets put their skills to the test, "walking" barge MMA 400 to the dock using a "heads to tails" configuration under the supervision of Captains Tom Tucker and Christian Petterson.

Meanwhile, in New Bedford, MTRA 1/C cadets took on the challenge of docking and undocking the Academy's 85-foot T/V Ranger, guided by Captains Kevin O'Sullivan (MTRA '11) and Christian Petterson (MTRA '08).

From mastering towing techniques to sharpening navigation, watch standing, and line handling skills, our cadets are gaining the real-world experience needed to succeed.

Two vessels. Two training experiences. One mission: Preparing the next generation of mariners.

"I know that it'll probably be a lot of what I learned on the training ship. Day-to-day operations, working with auxiliary machinery, repairing things. On ships I have to be the electrician, plumber, firefighter - all that stuff. You can't call anybody when you're out at sea. I'll have my work cut out for me, definitely, but I'm excited and I know I'm ready for it." - 2026 Graduate, Nolan Sherry, Third Assistant Engineer Unlimited

"My most memorable experience so far has been my co-op this summer working for Dellbrook JKS. Taking the Project Management minor was directly applicable to my co-op and going over the budgeting and scheduling and the scope of the project out in the field really was a huge help." - 1/C Leticia Ferrari, International Maritime Business

"I would definitely say the hands-on applications is what drew me to Mass Maritime and the Facilities Engineering program. Getting out in the field and being in a boiler room and power plant-like environment was when it really clicked for me." - 1/C Eddie Correia, Facilities Engineering

This summer, 2/C Energy Systems Engineering student Trey McPherson completed his co-op with MWH Constructors on the Dennis Water Resource Recovery Facility project in Dennis, Massachusetts.

Throughout the summer, Trey gained hands-on experience in both field engineering and construction management. His work included reviewing project drawings, assisting with field layout, reviewing submittals, tracking equipment deliveries, conducting safety inspections, and working with programs such as Procore and Autodesk.

Trey also worked alongside superintendents, project engineers, field engineers, subcontractors, and safety personnel, gaining firsthand insight into the construction of large-scale water and wastewater infrastructure projects.

One of the most valuable parts of the experience was learning directly in the field, where Trey developed a deeper understanding of the importance of communication, organization, problem-solving, and safety on a construction project.

Safety in action
Massachusetts Maritime Academy students connected classroom learning with real-world industry experience during Safety Night, hosted by the MMA ASSP Student Section and the American Society of Safety Professionals Greater Boston Chapter. A huge shoutout to KASK for sponsoring this event and showcasing their safety hardhats to the students.

MMA alumni Meghan Petruzziello and Tim Condon of Turner Construction Company returned to campus to share their experiences in construction safety, discuss career pathways, and give cadets an inside look at where a career in safety can lead.
From the classroom to the construction site, opportunities like Safety Night give our cadets the chance to learn directly from industry professionals, build connections, and see what’s possible after MMA.
