It's that time of year, please be mindful when you are outdoors. Here are some helpful tips

A mosquito sample collected in Wareham has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV).

Residents are encouraged to take precautions to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illness. Recommended public health measures include using mosquito repellents containing an EPA-registered active ingredient and taking extra care during peak mosquito activity, particularly around dusk and dawn.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) will continue enhanced mosquito surveillance activities in the region.

❄️ If you noticed something in your home this summer and put off addressing it, here is what the next several months look like if it stays unaddressed.

Moisture that is present in wall cavities, crawl spaces, attic sheathing, or subfloor framing when fall arrives does not dry out on its own as temperatures drop. It gets locked in. Cold temperatures slow evaporation significantly, which means wet materials that might have dried with professional intervention in August will still be wet in November. They will be wet in February. And by March, when temperatures begin to climb again and mold growth accelerates, what was a contained problem in summer has had six months of winter to establish itself more deeply in the structure.

Along the South Shore and Cape Cod, coastal homes that held moisture through a humid summer carry that moisture into a wet fall season. The combination of high ambient humidity and dropping temperatures creates conditions where moisture sits in structures through the entire winter with nowhere to go.

Mold does not stop in cold temperatures. It slows. But it is still present, still viable, and ready to accelerate the moment conditions warm. The mold we find in April is almost always the mold that was seeding in October.
