Meet the volunteers!

Rachel works with kids in a bordering county, and her whole family came in to help on event day.

"I was in charge of checking in kiddos and directing them in which direction to go to get their new bikes and gear. It is an amazing experience to be able to help the community and help build a new generation of bike community in these kiddos. It makes my heart happy to see more kids on bikes, especially when they are all smiles about their new gear."

Rachel also helped get a bike to another kid just yesterday. We appreciate you, Rachel!!

Meet the volunteers!

Elio is a NICA parent and tireless volunteer for the community. He came in from out of town in the early morning to make sure we got set up to perfection on event day, and has supported Ride and Shine behind the scenes from the beginning.

Elio says, "It was really great to see so many kids participating and to see the community support such a great program. Providing these kids with a quality bike can lead to a lifetime of healthy activity and fun."

New series: Meet the volunteers!

Jennifer is a teacher who came all the way from Mon County to help out this year with getting kids outfitted with their helmets, and loading up the van in the early morning.

Jennifer says, "I was so happy to see the delight on their faces. Not only were they getting a brand new bike of their very own, but they were also excited about their new helmet."

This week we're contacting families who received bikes to check in and learn how the kids are doing with their new bikes and how we can do even better next year. The weather is beginning to cool, but we hope all of us (kids of all ages!) continue to play outside and love to ride! Thanks for following Ride and Shine.

It was a beautiful day this past June when we had the privilege of giving away more than 20 new bicycles with accessories! Remind your people! We are accepting applications for free bikes for kids. Recipients must be Upshur County residents, in grades K-5*, and at or below 150% of federal poverty level.** Applications available at the Mountain CAP Upshur County Family Support Center in downtown Buckhannon, or you can apply by phone at 304-878-1202.

We'd love to see your applications for our 2027 giveaway!

*New this year, we will consider applicants up to grade 7 in special cases.
**Income numbers are on the application or call that number if unsure.

Ride and Shine is still doing some wrapping up of our 2026 giveaway, and hard at work on 2027.

In a few weeks, we'll be reaching out to families who got bikes this year with a *very simple and short* survey to help us report to our funders, and improve for next year.

We are doing some grant reporting to organizations who helped fund the bikes we gave away in 2026.

And, we are hard at work on applications for grant funding for 2027!

Folks, for all that our sponsors and partners and funders have made this possible, today's post feels extra special. Ride and Shine would never have gotten off the ground without our volunteers, from our Board of Directors, to those who helped build bikes and organize and plan, to the ~50 (!!) folks who showed up on event day to get things done. You are too many to name, but I feel humbled by the amazing work you've put in. Thanks to friends and neighbors from here in Upshur County as well as Randolph, Lewis, Harrison, and Monongalia Counties.

And! to our individual donors, from 'round here and from out of state, you showed up with your wallets and made an absolute difference. THANK YOU. We can't say it enough.
