I was running a meeting today and someone said to the group “when a person wants recovery, they’ll do whatever it takes to get it”.

And I had to respectfully disagree with her.

In a perfect world, yes. In a world without mental health challenges, life stressors, lack of means/resources or past trauma, absolutely let’s just go get it - right?!

Let’s look at other examples ~ when I say I need to cut out sugar while making my way over to the donuts. Or when I tell myself I’m not going to blow anymore money gambling as I turn into the gas station for “one more” scratch off.
Addiction is all the same. It’s the substances that vary.
I’m not here to tell anyone what to do or what to believe, but I will say this - recovery does not have to be all or nothing. Time absolutely takes time.

So if you’ve tried and “failed”, it’s not because you don’t want it.
Go try again.
Try as many times as you have to.
Where there is breath, there is hope 💜

The brain takes time to heal.
Recovery isn’t just about stopping a substance, it’s about establishing new neural pathways. It’s like driving down a new highway, but the old dirt road is still available - you just have to choose not take it anymore.
This healing takes TIME and new habits to form the new pathways.
One doesn’t become addicted overnight, and one doesn’t heal overnight. Recovery makes a lot of demands - Physically, mentally, emotionally and socially

So if you’re trying to sustain recovery, be gentle with yourself.
And if you’re supporting someone in recovery, give them grace.
