Thereโ€™s a little magic in the forest when we slow down long enough to notice it. ๐ŸŒฒโœจ

Weโ€™ve been playing with one of natureโ€™s simplest treasures and turning long Ponderosa pine needles into Forest Fairy Wands. The needles bend into the sweetest little heart, and a twig, some twine, and a handful of colorful beads turn them into something pretty special. ๐Ÿ’š

But the beads are more than decoration.

As children string each one, they can name something they see, love, or are grateful for in nature: a singing bird, a cool breeze, a smooth river rock, a wildflower, sunshine filtering through the trees, or maybe someone they love exploring the forest with.

Then make a wish. โœจ

Itโ€™s a simple little nature craft, but it gives us an opportunity to slow down, look closely, wonder, and build connection with the world around us.

These magical heart shaped needles were foraged from a Ponderosa pine.

Ponderosa pines often grow their long needles in bundles of three. Their forests provide food and shelter for birds, squirrels, and many other woodland creatures. And if you find an older Ponderosa, smell its warm, puzzle piece bark. Some people think it smells like vanilla! โœจ

And, of course, every Forest Fairy Wand needs a little forest exploration, so we created a coloring page and scavenger hunt to go along with it. ๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿฆ‹๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ

Whether your land is covered with oaks, pines, mixed woodland, or a combination of all three, this opportunity is for you.

Many people hear โ€œForest Stewardshipโ€ and assume itโ€™s only for large pine forests. It isnโ€™t. Californiaโ€™s oak woodlands are forests, too. If you care for wooded property, this workshop was created for landowners like you.

Whether you live in Oregon House, Dobbins, Brownsville, Browns Valley, Loma Rica, or the surrounding foothill communities, Iโ€™d encourage you to take a look.

I completed the UC ANR Forest Stewardship Workshop during COVID, and it was one of the most valuable educational experiences Iโ€™ve participated in. It transformed my understanding of forest stewardship and gave me the knowledge and confidence to better care for my own land.

Over the course of the workshop, youโ€™ll learn about:

๐Ÿ”ฅ Wildfire resilience and fuels reduction
๐Ÿฆ‰ Wildlife habitat and watersheds
๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Mapping and forest inventory
๐Ÿ“‹ Developing a stewardship plan for your property
๐Ÿค Working with forestry professionals
๐Ÿ’ฐ Cost-share and grant opportunities that may help fund stewardship projects

One of the greatest benefits is that participants who complete the workshop are eligible for a free site visit with a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) or another qualified natural resource professional. Having an expert walk your property and discuss management options specific to your land is an incredible opportunity.

๐Ÿ“… The next workshop begins August 4 and runs online through September 29.

๐ŸŒฒ The in-person field day is Saturday, August 29, in Plumas County, but attendance is optional. You do not have to own land in Plumas County or travel there to participate in the workshop. The weekly sessions are held online, so you can join from the comfort of your own home anywhere in California.

At Steward & Seed, weโ€™re also exploring the idea of offering an optional weekly community gathering for local participants. Imagine attending the online session from home, then gathering afterward with fellow landowners for coffee, conversation, questions, and collaborative discussions about applying what youโ€™re learning to our own foothill landscapes.

Weโ€™re also considering hosting a Forest Stewardship Information Night before a future cohort so more local landowners can learn about the program, meet others who have participated, and ask questions before enrolling.
