🦮 Today Is International Guide Dog Day — and Lions Are Part of the Story
Today, we join people around the world in recognizing International Guide Dog Day — a day that celebrates the incredible partnership between guide dogs and the individuals whose independence, mobility, and confidence are transformed by them.

For Lions, this isn’t just a day on the calendar.
It’s part of our identity.

🦮 Leader Dogs for the Blind — Founded by Lions

One of the strongest examples of Lions leadership is Leader Dogs for the Blind, founded in 1939 by three Lions Club members.
Today:

• Thousands of Lions Clubs support the program
• Lions serve as puppy raisers and volunteers
• Clubs fund training, travel, and services for clients
• All services are provided at no cost to the recipient

This is Lions history in action — still changing lives every single day.

🟨 Lions Project for Canine Companions

Lions also partner with Canine Companions, helping provide expertly trained service dogs — including guide dogs — to people with disabilities.
Lions have contributed millions of dollars, sponsored puppies, and supported training programs nationwide.

🟦 Why Guide Dogs Matter

A guide dog is more than a companion — it’s freedom.
It’s confidence.
It’s the ability to navigate the world with independence and dignity.

Every time a Lions Club donates, raises a puppy, hosts an event, or spreads awareness, we’re helping someone regain a part of their life that many take for granted.

🦁 This Is Who We Are

Lions serve.
We show up.
We meet needs that others overlook.
And we continue to support programs that bring light, mobility, and hope to people living with vision loss.

Guide dogs are a powerful reminder that service doesn’t just change circumstances — it changes lives.

🦁 Why Lions Wear the Yellow Vest — A Tradition Worth Knowing
If you’ve ever wondered why Lions around the world proudly wear the yellow (gold) service vest, the story goes deeper than just a uniform — it’s a symbol of identity, visibility, and unity.

From the earliest days of Lions Clubs International, the official colors were purple and gold, chosen in 1917 to represent loyalty, integrity, sincerity, and generosity. Over time, Lions’ branding materials shifted toward blue and gold for a more modern, consistent look — but the meaning behind the colors never changed.

Gold naturally became the color most associated with service, and the gold vest emerged as the universal identifier for Lions at projects, fundraisers, and community events. Members often describe it as something that instantly tells the public:

“A Lion is here to help.”

As Lions Clubs grew worldwide, the vest became a practical way to create a consistent, recognizable look across thousands of clubs. It also evolved into a walking scrapbook, with pins representing years of service, conventions, achievements, and club pride.

Whether your vest is simple or covered in decades of memories, it stands for the same thing:

Service. Community. Pride. And the shared mission of Lions everywhere — We Serve 💛
