On - and for the 25th anniversary of her book, ‘Nickel and Dimed’ - we’re remembering these words from our beloved founder, Barbara Ehrenreich.

When Ehrenreich discusses her time working at
Walmart as an investigative reporter, she remarks on the complexity and difficulty of her daily tasks, and emphasizes to all journalists that there is no such thing as “unskilled labor.”

At EHRP, we celebrate worker power and dignity every day, and we will keep shouting this truth in everything we do.

“According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 4 million Americans — 11% of the population — live below the poverty line. That is the numeric version of life. The human side of it was captured in a landmark book that came out nearly 25 years ago. The book is called ‘Nickel and Dimed,’ written by journalist and activist Barbara Ehrenreich. Ehrenreich died on in 2022. Let’s talk now about the book and its message today.”

Our founder, the great author and activist Barbara Ehrenreich, passed away four years ago, around that year’s Labor Day. It was also just a few days after her birthday.

For us at EHRP, Labor Day is not only a time to celebrate the workers whom our reporters cover all year long (many of them working-class journalists themselves). It’s also the time when we remember Barbara most keenly.

This year also marks a quarter of a century since the publication of Barbara’s seminal thesis on surviving low-wage work, ‘Nickel and Dimed.’ In a forum co-published with The Nation Magazine, Quart has brought together a group of writers who collaborated with, knew, or were greatly influenced by Barbara.
