One of us knows this system from the inside. When Donna was incarcerated, she earned 25 cents an hour. That was not a wage — it was a reminder that her labor had no value. She could not send money home to her daughter. She could not afford basic hygiene products — the small necessities that preserve a sense of self. That 26 cents an hour made it impossible to be a provider, a parent, a person with responsibilities beyond the walls.

If we expect incarcerated people to take responsibility, learn skills, and prepare for reentry, then we must also value their labor.

Last night the premiere of documentary (executive produced by Jamila T. Davis and Topeka K Sam) was very well received. It opened to a packed house. So honored and humbled to be a part of this historic time for New Jersey.
As we filmed the documentary, we were also advocating for the New Jersey Survivors Justice Act. When GOD shows up there is nothing impossible. Just as we were finishing up with the film, the New Jersey Legislators (OVERWHELMINGLY) passed the Bill. Then Governor Phil Murphy signed the Bill into Law.

"During COVID, it was incarcerated individuals who made the hand sanitizers to help keep everyone safe. But they are paid ten, twenty, thirty-three cents an hour. One in three families are being forced into debt to care for an incarcerated loved one.”

At the NAACP annual board meeting, labor advocates and civil rights leaders said the nation's subminimum wage system should be abolished.
