THE DAVIS FILES 🪲
Bette Davis is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, in the Court of Remembrance. Her sarcophagus reads:
SHE DID IT THE HARD WAY.
The line wasn’t hers — at first.
In 1951, the director Joseph Mankiewicz, who had just made All About Eve with her the year before, told her: “On your tombstone should be written ‘She did it the hard way.’”
He meant it as a compliment.
She lived another 38 years carrying that sentence. Through the Warner Bros. lawsuit, through the years of bad scripts, through Burnt Offerings, through the stroke, through her daughter’s tell-all memoir, through the cancer.
Months before she died, she said: “You know what they’ll write on my tombstone — ‘She did it the hard way.’”
They did.
The Bloody Ballad of Bette Davis tells the story of how she earned it.

About the Show

After a devastating world war destroys America and wipes out most of humanity, a glittering new city rises from the ashes. Imperius promises safety, order, and a future free from the chaos that once doomed the world. Built by a mysterious visionary known as The Architect and governed by his powerful artificial intelligence Melius, the city runs on perfect rules and unquestioned obedience. But when a curious young citizen, Carlos, begins to question the fate of his rebellious brother and forms an unexpected bond with Violet, the Architect’s daughter, cracks begin to appear in Imperius’s flawless design. As hidden truths emerge, the citizens of this fragile new society must confront a terrifying question: in a world rebuilt by machines and control, who actually decides humanity’s future?

13 years ago, Piper Theatre took its first show to Edinburgh.
The Island of Doctor Moreau. Somehow, we came home with a Bobby Award. We had no idea what we were doing. We just knew we had to be there.
3 more trips to Edinburgh later, we're back at Assembly Festival's Roxy Upstairs with our most ambitious show yet: The Bloody Ballad Of Bette Davis: A New Musical. Daily at 15:00, dark Thursdays, August 6–30.

Playwrights in Process meets on Monday, December 8, at 7:00 p.m. at the Old Stone House. We’ll have our usual gathering of actors, playwrights, and anyone who likes hearing raw pages read in a room where people are genuinely listening. This month, we’re featuring new work by Flo Ankah, Nancy Jun, and Helene Montagna. We’ll read twenty to twenty-five pages from each script, then take a little time for honest, supportive feedback. It’s free, it’s welcoming, and it’s an openhearted place for artists to stretch, test ideas, and see what else might be possible. Come join us! 🎭
